3 OT losses that all should have been wins, along with a loss to freaking Baylor at home. The OT losses were all on the road. First at kNebraska where a Zac Taylor pass hit Nick Leaders in the chest in OT...if Nick had caught it, the game was over.

Second, at Mizzou, where we spotted them a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on interception AND fumble returns for TD's, then scored 24 straight points while knocking Brad Smith out of the game, only to watch some unknown by the name of Chase Daniel come in and light us up. Then the refs blew a call right before the end of regulation (I think) when a Mizzou ball carrier fumbled the ball over to us, only to have the ref from all the way on the other side of the field come running in to say that his forward motion had been stopped, so he was down....only it clearly had not been on replay.

And we all know what happened in the game at KU. 3 timeouts, wind at your back with about 90 second left in the game, score is tied with a shot at the Big 12 championship game on the line and the most prolific receiver in ISU history standing out wide of the formation......and McCarney chooses to go to OT.

That, my fellow Cyclone fan friends.....is THE lost football season. That team had the talent to get a 10 win season. A few bad breaks and a few mind-numbing coaching decisions kept it down to just simply a mediocre season. Not that I'm still bitter or anything.

Think I still have most of that season on VHS.

I hate Chase Daniel. Please refrain from further mentions.....his best game ever was against us.

Had we played every game in 2005 like we played both Iowa and A&M, and I mean stayed on the gas pedal all game instead of going conservative offensively trying to protect small leads, perhaps we go 11-1 or even 12-0 that season, perhaps playing in our first ever BCS bowl and owning our first Big 12 championship. Instead, we ****** away that season because we played scared.

pretty much the definition of the Danny Mac style.

Loved the guy, don't get me wrong, but man, he should have learned just a little bit more from his old boss when it comes to keeping the momentum.

Also, his complete misuse of Ryan Kock for two seasons. "Everyone in the nation knows that when Iowa State is on the goal line, Kock is the one who's going to run it." Of course they do. Because no one in the nation could keep him from getting into the endzone from that far our.

Agree with you on every single point. I was one of the biggest Danny Mac defenders on this site. By the end of the 2006 season, though, I could no longer justify defending him.

Do you remember Danny Mac's last game here? It was against Mizzou. All of our running backs were injured except for Kock, so Mac was forced to use him as the primary running back the entire game. Kock ******* lit them up. I just looked up the stats, he got 179 yards on 32 carries for a 5.6 ypc average and 2 TD's. I remember several times he had the opportunity to just run the ball out of bounds but instead, he turned it up field just to steamroll a Mizzou defender and gain another 3-4 yards.

The guy was a beast, and I remember pining all season long for Mac to use him in more than just short yardage situations because he was going to break his foot off in defenders' backsides.....but alas, that wasn't Mac's style, and he got his *** canned for it.

Kock's 2005 stats are just silly.
*Averaged 10.8 ypg
*Longest carry of the season was 8 yards
*Scored 13 TD on 54 carries
*Only ballcarrier on the team to not be tackled for a loss

I remember that game well. I remember comparing the situation to Jim Walden refusing to play freshman Troy Davis on a team that didn't win a single game. He didn't red shirt him, no, just sat him on the bench and wasted a year. Same thing with Ryan Kock. Ryan averaged over 5 ypc on that season. He averaged a touchdown every 4 times he touched the ball going into that season, and all of a sudden, we started using bubble screens and QB keepers on the goal line, because Mac didn't want to be "predictable."

We stopped using him, despite the fact that every time he touched the ball, we either got a touchdown or a first down. We went to Josh Johnson, a true freshman walk-on, after Hicks and Scales went down, and even Johnson got injured. I remember chants in Jack Trice during the Kansas game, and Ryan trying really really hard not to acknowledge them.

Yep, and he got a grand total of 13 carries going into the Kansas game (or, 1.4 times per game...)

I also remember towards the end of the game we had it on the 2 yard line and needed a touchdown to put the game away. I thought in my head,"ok, Mac, don't get cute- just give it to Kock up the middle and finish this." Well instead they tried some fake and naked roll out with Meyer that ended in a huge loss. Then a missed field goal. Mizzou drove down the field and were going to get the winning TD until the big holding call saved the clones.

That was a microcosim of the Mac era for me, except he pulled out the win that time.

The toughest I ever saw him play was against Iowa in 2005. That's not a good thing vs. a season that should have had much better results. (Sorry to anyone who still LOVES that game).

He was tall, not that fast, and, as previous posts have suggested, used his body more than his hands. Had some nice plays for ISU in the time he played. If all goes well, next season ISU will have at least 3 receivers that are more NFL-savvy than someone like Blythe.

Austin Flynn's skill set was better suited for something like the NFL, and his skill set wasn't suited for the NFL.

I always thought Flynn was the better receiver from a polish standpoint. He did a lot more of the little things well, but didn't possess Blythe's physical tools. Blythe was a little like James Hardy, IMO. Very good college receiver, but attitude and being very rough around the edges when it came to the details kept them from sticking.

I was at that game and was on the west side where the hold was called. I can't say for sure, but I think that call was a gift from the officials, because I saw nothing that looked like holding.
