Two first round?

It seems like ISU has had players "randomly" selected for this ever since they started this first round (pig tail). I haven't gone back to double check this in the past but we have two in it this time and that just seems weird that we can get those all the time. Beard and Gibson would have had a shot at AA but now there is almost no way. It just seems like people a rough draw for guys who at least had a shot.

No ISU wrestlers have had a pigtail match from years 2010-2012. Not sure what your criteria for "get those all the time" is, but 2 in the past 4 years is not it. Hell, I just looked and it seemed like Iowa and Oklahoma had 3-4 in just one year in that same span.

Actually, you know what? I'm just going to point out how dumb this thread is. I looked back all the way to the 2007 brackets looking at pigtails, saw zero ISU wrestlers get them outside of this year, and in 08 it doesn't even look like they had the pigtail matches.

Last 5 ISU wrestlers to be in a pigtail/R64 match:

Mitch Mueller, 2008
Nick Gallick, 2007
Nick Passolano, 2005
Zach Roberson, 2001
Zach Thompson, 1999

Kurt Backes and Trent Paulson had conso pigtail matches in 2004 after losing their R32 match.

This made me realize that the 08 brackets had the pigtails separated from the champ brackets, which is where I got lost on that one and the ones previous to it.

Yeah, the pigtails aren't a bad thing. Beard will be favored by a fair bit and Gibson should pick up a win as well. Both have a reasonable shot at bonus points. Those pigtails could be a 2-4 point team bonus for us.

Just for fun, the next 5:

Barry Weldon, 1996
Chris Bono, 1994 -- lost pigtail match and was eliminated. No conso for pigtail losers then.
Gary McCall, 1990
Bob Thompson, 1989 -- same result as Bono.
Mike Moreno, 1989

So when you go back 10 pigtail appearances, you get to the father of two current wrestlers.

Looking at the brackets we certainly didn't get terribly lucky, but it could have been a lot worse.

Goettl pulls the #8 seed. Not ideal but it is winnable. And a loss likely gives him a fairly easy first round consolation.

#12 for Mayfield and a tough consolation waiting. But honestly, he'd be the underdog in any match in Des Moines. #12 is better than #1.

Moreno will be favored in the first round but then runs right into #3 P. Yates. It would have been nice to open up against a lower seed so he could have a better chance of getting further into the bracket. Especially since the only reason Yates is #3 is because Moreno knocked off Caldwell last week. A loss to Yates would also put him right into another guy who was right on the verge of being seeded. I think of all our guys Moreno got the toughest draw in comparison to what he is capable of. Getting pulled into Caldwell or Taylor's 1/4 bracket would have been vastly preferable.

Weatherman pulled #10 D. Yates. He won't be favored. But it is a winnable match.

Gadson probably will get the Illinois wrestler in the first round. He beat him 9-5 at Midlands. He'll need to be ready, but will be favored.

Gibson probably got as good a draw as he could have hoped for. He'll be favored in his first match and the second will be a tossup.
