If I remember correctly (from the Great Native American Nickname Purge from several years ago now which cost Illinois their logo and mascot and other schools their nicknames), unlike with Florida State and Central Michigan where the Seminoles and Chippewas respectively approved the use of their names with said institutions, I don't think the Sioux ever approved the use of their name.
Correct, and it was the word "Fighting" they didn't approve of being used with their name.

The problem is the name "Sioux" includes several different nations that speak similar languages, and they had to get approval from all. I think the majority approved, but one or two of the groups did not. One of my friends is a big UND hockey fan and I've heard him talk about it several times.

I've been on the Fargo campus for work 4 times in the last 3 months. With all the flat ground and the wind up there, they should be called the NDSU Windmillers!! Except that is in the middle of know where, Fargo is a very nice place, and is really growing.

Way up there
I don't get how Notre Dame gets a free pass here, not much more stereotypical than an Irishman with his dukes up ready to thrown down. It's 100% the exact same as Fighting Sioux.

"Zombies from UNDead Zombies are really "IN" right now. The mascot/nickname would be EPIC! The ead could stand for Enlightened And Disciplined!"
