Very Early Top 25 for 2013-14

Because Kentucky is returning their 2nd and 4th leading scorers and an incredibly athletic 7 footer. Plus their recruiting class consists of:
#1 PF
#1 PG
#3 SF
#1 SG
#1 C
#9 PF

And they have the possibility of adding Wiggins, who is probably the biggest recruit of the last 5 years (at least).

How'd their outstanding recruiting class work out for them this year?

You might rank a team with returning players when you know the returning players are good. When you know the guys returning range from below average to average...

This is what I don't understand. It isn't like all of a sudden they will become athletic. There is a clear ceiling with that team.

And it is funny how anyone can still say fran is a "good" coach after having a train run on him by Scott Drew.

Iowa will not be a bad team next year. Back-to-back-to-back NIT appearances will be impressive.

That is the point. They will be a good team. But after 4 years will that be enough for the delusional hawks like hawjack here.

In Mad Fran's defense, I'm not so sure Pierre Jackson didn't take over coaching or maybe Drew got some mayoral advice.

Iowa had a decent, not great, season and returns all their guys. Presumably their Big10 mates will lose a fair amount of good players. As a result, Iowa is getting some fringe top 25 preseason talk. Why is this so offensive to people?

2010-2011... 11-20 (4-14) 10th in BIG
2011-2012... 18-17 (8-10) 7th (tie) in BIG
2012-2013... 25-13 (9-9) 6th in BIG

He still has work to do, but three years in, I'll take those results.

Hypothetical: if Fran regresses next year, will you be calling for his ouster?

Would depend on how bad they did. But doubtful. I like the direction the program is headed and the style of play he embraces. Would love to see us get more athletes and better wide-bodies in the middle, all in due time I hope. Our problem this year had little to do with Fran (though some of his substitution patterns are headscratchers) and more to do with horrible shooting, youth, and Marble taking the occasional night off.

Marble is why I think this is quite overly optimistic. Not wishing him harm, but if he gets an injury, would think they would struggle to score unless Jok is better than I think he will be next year. And watching Baylor game, Iowa will suffer against any team with decent bigs.

7th last year with multiple wins over ranked opponents
6th this year with the easiest conference SOS and didn't beat a ranked team

Lots of progress from year 2 to year 3

No Michigan on that list would be enough for me to agree with the "way too early" part.

Q: Does Iowa play Michigan, MSU, OSU more than once next year or will be we be playing Michigan as often as they do? (And, yes, I know they played MSU twice if you count the Big 10 tournament) I don't buy the "played in this tough conference stuff" when you didn't actaully have a tough schedule because of the goofed up unbalanced schedule. It's a little like when we excused ourself in football as playing in a tough conference back when we rotated through the south portion of the conference and got an easier schedule draw in some years.

Wins against Indiana and twice against MSU easily were within reach, just fell apart at the end. Like I said, I like the progress he's made. Let's just say it's a good thing you don't have to put up with him as your coach. You like your guy, I like mine.

I'll throw the same question that was asked of me about Fran back at you with Rhoads. If he continues to plateau or regress, will you be calling for his head? What do you think about the progress he's made?

It's a good thing we don't hold CPR to the same standards for progress, this board would be unreadable during football season.

I like Rhoads and don't think I could ever call for his head, probably just like you with Fran. Don't get me wrong I understand why Hawk fans are happy, there is excitement around the program just like there is around Cyclone football...but to think there was a lot of progress from last year to this year is not that accurate. More wins but an easier SOS and back to back NIT tournaments.

I didn't post:

2010 5-7
2011 6-7
2012 6-7

Lot of works to do but I'll take those results.
