We lost quite a few close games this year - but those 2 losses to KU were the biggest head-scratchers.

Wondered why they were keeping her around for so long

She took them to back-to-back Sweet 16s in 2012 and 2013. I believe buying her out prior to that would have been really expensive. They gave her an extension after the Sweet 16s, but the buyout is relatively low (around $400k).

If I understand it right, she was hired in 2006 with a contract running through 2011, and in 2009 that contract was extended through 2014. That contract required her to be paid the full remaining contract if she were fired without cause. In 2012, she signed an extension through 2018 with a much more lenient buyout -- $395K regardless of when she's fired.

I think she's a good coach just doesn't appear to be an amazing recruiter, which should be easy to do with those facilities.

I'm sad but not devastated. I'll be really devastated when Sherri Coale goes. She ain't the sexiest chick I've seen, but not gonna find many WBB coaches hotter than that.

Too bad we can't have her as an assistant... Go ahead call me crazy.

She's better off getting a head coaching job at a mid-major or low-level high-major (Utah is open) and proving she can still coach. She was quite successful at Virginia Tech, which is why Kansas paid so much to get her -- they paid a $500k buyout to VT when they stole her away.

I always thought Bonnie was a great coach and recruiter. Big 12 is tough on coaches, just ask Gestencours.

Man, that's crappy luck for her. Verbal KSU; KSU fires coach; switch verbal to KU (and eventually sign LOI); KU fires coach.
Bill may rest comfortably she didn't commit. Actually I really liked Kylee and wanted her at Iowa State. But we seem to be picking up some great Minnie talent...and yes it is a tough league to coach.

There are several coaches who were highly successful in other leagues, and hit hard times in the Big 12. In addition to Bonnie and Goestenkors, Currie could never get going at Tech. She did really well at Purdue before TTU. Currie also had a rough year at Alabama this year (13-19, 2-14 in the SEC).

Though not in the BIG XII, what about third year Illini coach Matt Bollant? A guy I had designs on to one day replace Bill.

Here is this years record:

Overall,
15-16 with only 6 wins in the B1G - last year he was 9-21 with only 2 wins in conference. With great recruits onboard this season (Chatrice White - a former Iowa State target, Amarah Coleman and Kissinger) it seems there should be a breakout. I was surprised there wasn't and if Bollant doesn't show some progress in '15-'16 the heat may be on.

Could she be like Claire Ricketts and still come to ISU?

Claire had not signed an LOI yet, just a verbal. Kopatich's case could be more like Katie Robinette's where she has to sit out a year and lose eligibility for that year. Unless the Big 12 would grant an exception. Don't count on it.

Too bad she's fired, it was better having her around. The gal at UNO that was at ISU as an assistant it would be a nice upgrade for her. It's her first year and I think she went 13-18. She won't get it but hey ISU staff at other schools is always good.
