What is your prediction for Saturday?
It's a tough one for me because its strength versus strength (UNI O vs ISU D) and who the hell knows versus who the hell knows (UNI D vs ISU O). I'm pretty confident that UNI has the better special teams.

If the forecast holds, it favors Iowa State just simply because you need more bodies when it's 95 degrees out.

In the end, my head sees something like 27-21 Iowa State. My heart doesn't agree but let's go with my head :)

If I could stomach it, I'd look at the lineups for the TCU game and look at the injured list, too. Anyone want to look?
I don't want to get depressed lol that game was bad... I don't think losing the seniors is as big of a deal. Hell, we had a ton of seniors in 2021 and only went 7-6. I want playmakers, regardless of their age. The experience will come as the year goes on.

Specialists- Kicker Matthew Cook is an All American. All time leader in FGs in the Valley and back for his COVID year. Same guy that hit 2 50 yarders in Ames as a true frosh. He'll get some NFL looks, I would imagine. Two very good punters. Loecher started early last year before getting sick and ending up the ICU with a rare lung condition that nearly killed him and ended his season, he's got a clean bill of health. Noah Pettinger was 2nd team all league after taking over. We'll fair catch everything and the return game most likely won't be a factor.

Why the hell don't we pony up and steal some decent kickers? Aggravating as hell that UNI has better special teams than us.

I will never understand it. UNI with no money and no resources has had nothing but consistently great kickers for 30 years. Hell, there are two more on the roster at UNI that would be better than anything Iowa State has had recently.

You weren't getting Cook though. 'Panthers' might have been his first word. That family has huge UNI ties.

does the OL take a step back with Clanton not being there?

I don't think so. There' still a bunch of experienced bodies and the new OL coach was actually the OL coach before Clanton that put several guys in the NFL.

Clanton is a very good OL coach but I think from a program standpoint, UNI is going to miss his recruiting more than his on field coaching simply because he's AWESOME with kids and was able to get into areas that UNI hasn't traditionally recruited. This is in no way a slight on his coaching. He's still a rising star that Iowa State is going to love as long as they can hang on to him.

Farley's coaching tree is damn impressive and he's been a complimentary of Clanton as he has anybody he's had and there's a bunch of guys that he's had that have had big time jobs at the college and NFL level.

My pleasure. I'll go position by position and happy to answer any followups...

The offensive philosophy is 'Run for yards, throw for miles'. Highest scoring offense in the Valley last year and averaged over 40 points in the last 6 games last year once everything clicked.

QB- Theo Day is the best we've had from a talent standpoint since Kurt Warner. 1st Team All League, All American. Big Arm, fairly mobile, big frame. Just not a lot of those guys at the FCS level.

RB- All 3 listed are going to get touches on Saturday. Edwards was a late transfer from UTSA and played quite a bit of football there. Bey-Buie and Jenkins have kind of been 'next' since early last year playing behind a 5th year that graduated.

WR- Sam Schnee (pronounced SCHNAY) is a very good possession receiver that has that ability to get himself open. Morancy was a State Champion sprinter in Florida and is the home run threat. Logan Wolf just simply hasn't been able to stay healthy but was one of the highest rated recruits we've had offensively in recent years but he's still kind of a mystery. Hutson is a big target that kind of became the security blanket down the stretch. Buntin is a transfer from Kent State. The freshman was a Pennsylvania state track champion. It gets spread around pretty well in this offense so you'll hear all those names.

TE- Alex Allen is a lot like his brother. Big target, good hands, good blocker and will find himself in an NFL camp next summer. UNI doesn't run many multiple TE sets.

OL- Jared Penning is the only returning starter. He's an NFL guy like his brother but isn't elite like Trevor is. Arends started two years ago but missed most of last year thanks to a lat tear. Roper, Pelton, Amos and Anderson have played a lot of football at UNI but were behind older guys. Anderson started 6 games at guard last year but has bumped out to tackle. Vold and Kelly are both FBS transfers (Iowa and Arkansas State)

Defense-Long time coordinator Jeremiah Johnson is back after a year as DC at Kent State. Last year did not look like UNI at all defensively and the new coordinator was demoted after week 3 and fired after the season. It was a disaster.

DL- Lots of experienced playmakers up front. Khristian Boyd is multiple time All League and very good against the run. Devin Rice is a 3 year starter but missed a bunch of time with injuries last year. Corrdarious Bailey is and Iowa State transfer that led the team in sacks last year but he's not great against the run. Butler started a bunch last year and is a long pass rusher. Kriebs and Hewitt played a bunch last year as redshirt freshmen. Peeples and Crook-Jones are FBS transfers (Memphis and K-State)

LB- Two AA LBs graduated. Ben Belken played quite a bit last year and is solid. Not much experience otherwise. This is my biggest area of concern on the roster.

DB-Woo Governor was All League and led the team in INTs. Edwin Dearman was the leading tackler on the team last year. The rest is transfers and young guys. Galvin was a big priority in the 22 class but everything else that we're going to see are transfers that haven't played a snap at UNI. This would be the other area of concern for me. There's talent but I don't know how it meshes.

Honestly, assuming the defense figures it out, this is as excited as I've been for UNI football in over a decade.
Jeez I hope ISU can keep it within three scores. ;)

I kid, I kid. Panthers should make some noise in FCS this year. Won’t be an easy one

One of my best friends has a son that gets his first start at LB for UNI Saturday. He's a stud. His brother just got drafted by the Twins from Iowa. They played at Urbandale and upset #1 Centennial a few years ago.

I'll be cheering for Tucker but hoping it's a long day for him and the Panthers. FWIW, he loved Clanton even though he was on the other side of the ball.

I get what you're saying, but Mevis was pretty damn good exactly two seasons ago.

The defense gave up less than 300 yards per game against higher level competition and a non-existent offense last year.

I have no idea if our offense will score, but I doubt UNI scores 21 or more, unless it’s a special teams/defensive touchdown. Assuming a relatively clean game from both teams, I’d bet it it’ll be something like 21-14 or 14-7 kind of deal, assuming ISU's offense continues to struggle.

ISU defense will be tough to score on. I imagine our OL leaning on that DL all game will pay off in the second half. I think UNI will stack the box and make it tough to run. But we’ll pop a few big ones after Norton softens them up. WRs will be in single coverage all day, which means play action should be there.

After all this hype about violence out of the O-line and their alleged weight/strength gains, if we can't run on a defense that size it'll be a long year. 240 pound DE's, tiny secondary.

Dline isn't always about size and any sort of disruption could screw up an Oline still adjusting to a new system.

This game won't define the team/season but it will be good to get a glimpse of where things are.

UNI will sell out, stack the box, and shut down our running game. And CMC will stubbornly believe we can, and should, be able to run it down their throat, and will run our RB's right into their wall all game long. So unfortunately, it will likely be close and come down to the end.

CMC plays the worst possible offense against both UNI and Iowa... plays right into their hands. You will need to spread UNI and Iowa out, make their LBs cover our WR's and TE's and run sideline to sideline... but instead we will run, run, run... right into stacked boxes.
