I live 40 miles from the old market and I never go. Just plenty to do in Iowa. The 100 mile trip to Des Moines is more fun, and you don't see all the Husker gear either!! Enjoy your trip, it will be something different. Go to the zoo during college world series, you get special parking and hardly anyone is at the zoo. This might change once the new stadium is built.

BTW, be sure to take in the Durham Western Heritage Museum, in the Old Market.

If you want cheap food, Spaghetti Works can't be beat. All-you-can-eat, and you can take home what you don't eat.

I haven't been there since the **** roach incident. I saw 2 and they told me it was because they just had a pest control guy through earlier in the morning. (to be fair it was about 10 years ago)

I live in West O and rarely go down to the Old Market. The only time we make it there is during the holidays (for the lights and ice skating) or when people are visiting from out of town. One can only do so much with a bunch of knick-knack stores and few restaurant options.

I do love the Dubliner though. It's probably my favorite bar in Omaha.

I grew up in Southwest Iowa so I would like to think I know the Old Market pretty well, but for the life of me I couldn't think of a really good Greek Resturant.

My 2 Suggestions:
The Upstream Brewery. Really nice, sophisticated atmosphere and good food. The Old Market location is in a pretty cool old downtown building. Great brews as well!! Upstream Brewing Company

Rick's Cafe Boat Yard. This one has great food and overlooks the Missouri River. Pretty cool setting, when the patio is great even though the Missouri River is nothing special. Not sure if the patio is open in the winter though. http://www.rickscafeboatyard.com/

I like Mickel's (Mexican Resturant) and the old classic Spaghetti Works as well.

Enjoy!!

I second this one BIG TIME! Upstream has great food and great beer. Get the sampler, as I think it's less than $5 and has a small glass of every beer they brew. Good stuff.

If you are heading to the Zoo and like Mexican food, try Howards. It is very close to the zoo and suppose to be one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Midwest. I personally hate Mexican but have been drug there kicking and screaming to many times to count.

If the weather isn't good enough for the zoo you can also check out the Joslyn Art Museum. It's very nice. www.joslyn.org . They have a wildlife exhibit going on currently. A great Steak House that is often overlooked is casciossteakhouse.com
Its been around for over 60 years and the food is great.

I sometimes eat at the Joslyn at noon for about $10. it is catered from a ralston company. The lunch area is right in the middle of the museum.

The only real seafood place downtown is Absolutely Fresh.

By the new under construction ballpark, three new restaurants have opened (two have pizza).

Trini's (Mexican) is quaint and downstairs in Old Market. It is near Toads.

No one has mentioned Omaha Prime yet (open only at night).

Some are retaurants that are old time: Johnny's (steak), Caniglias (Italian), Anthonys (steak), Harrs in Waterloo, Pink Poodle in Iowa, Skeeter Barnes in CB.

Warren Buffet eats steak at Gorats on W Center near greek islands.

Then there are the 3 casino pigouts.

I agree with the M's Pub suggestion. They have good, unique food at a wide range of price points. If you go, make a reservation. Every time I have tried to walk in or make a reservation a few hours before, they have been booked through the night.

My other two favorites in Omaha, though they require some driving, is Jam's (around 78th and Dodge) and Mark's Bistro (around 50th and Underwood). Again, good range of options at variety of price points.

Upstream has good food, but I don't think it's paticularly memorable.

If you're looking for a good steak, I would check out Sullivan's Steakhouse (around 14th and Farnam), or if you want to drive, Mahogenys (the Boy's town exit from Dodge, around 140th-144th).

I loved Skeeter Barnes but it has been closed going on a year now.

I will also suggest Johnny's Cafe off of 27th and L street. Great steak house!

The exception would be the smoked gouda and ale soup. If you're a fan of beer cheese soup, it's a must try. If you're not a fan, you will be after trying it.

If you a up for a drive, after the boss goes shopping at westroads mall you can head over to Mediterranean cafe and wine bar. One block south of blondo on the westside of 120th. Greek and Mediterranean food decent prices pretty low key too. Food was good and service was nice. Just a nice quiet place.
