We'll see how the non-Nick lineup works vs. the next few opponents until he returns, but this could have some good benefits, near-term and longer.
1. If the team can work through his absence and perform well, the healing time can only be a benefit for NWB.
2. This forced Wiggi to assume more of the PG role, or more balance as a combo-guard.
3. It requires more minutes from Talley than he would've gotten if Weiler-Babb was available. So he has to have more active impact.
3b. If Talley responds, once Nick is back, he can become true 6th man, higher in rotation than Brase, whose role is more focused on spelling Young and Lard for a few minutes here & there. Talley's MPG can rise a little, Brase and Beverly's reduced a bit. I think Brase fits that role well, he's not as sustainable for longer stretches (mainly because he isn't a scoring threat).

My worry is that you often see a team rally around the loss of a teammate for a game or two, and then they come back to Earth a little. I guess that all depends on how long he is out. I'm hoping that it's only two games, but I do want it to be long enough to truly improve his condition.

Talley also allows provides a much better defensive match up against stretch fours who have been killing us from deep.

True, it's possible it could have that effect. Sometimes it can be The Opposite: Players have to collectively fill the gaps left by the missing player. They have to tap into things they don't normally have to contribute. And when he returns, the unit becomes stronger.

An example might be 99-00. Seems like Johnson, Horton and Shirley each were out for a few games at certain points in the season. I have no idea if their absence-then-return strengthened the team more than it already was (or specifically which games they missed), but that's the way I viewed it at the time.

I believe Rancik was out for a period as well. It seemed like ISU couldn't ever get Paul and Martin healthy and back up to speed at the same time.

That's a long time ago for a bad knee.
Too long.

It’ll be interesting to see how the staff plays Talley when NWB gets back. It’s clear Talley’s impact goes down without the ball. At the same time, as good of pg as NWB is, he would benefit from sharing the load.

He's been hobbled basically all season. Remember how explosive he was in the tip off tourney? Many people including myself (never miss an opportunity to preen:cool:) had suspicions early on that he was hurt because he lost his explosiveness.

Have they released any results of the MRI that he was supposed to have taken yesterday?

Nick seems like such a good kid.

Nothing would make me happier to see him come back at 100% and healthy next year, lead a good team to some great victories, and be the player that we know he can be as a senior and then head off into a productive, lucrative professional career.
