I went to a 4A school where 200 kids (blatant exaggeration) went out for every sport. If you weren't 6-2 you didn't play. Although I had what I like to call "general male athletic skill," I was 5-8 and 145. I'm a little taller and a LOT heavier now.
My varsity basketball career consisted of one minute and 54 seconds vs. Cedar Rapids Regis in 1989 during which I never touched the ball.
I didn't go out for hs football, mostly because I was too lazy.
I did, however, get plenty of court/field time playing the position of MASCOT.
I also played varsity tennis, which you'll notice I listed below the position of mascot.
