I went to a 4A school where 200 kids (blatant exaggeration) went out for every sport. If you weren't 6-2 you didn't play. Although I had what I like to call "general male athletic skill," I was 5-8 and 145. I'm a little taller and a LOT heavier now.

My varsity basketball career consisted of one minute and 54 seconds vs. Cedar Rapids Regis in 1989 during which I never touched the ball.

I didn't go out for hs football, mostly because I was too lazy.

I did, however, get plenty of court/field time playing the position of MASCOT.

I also played varsity tennis, which you'll notice I listed below the position of mascot.

Started strong safety, rotated in at WR at a 4A school. Also was a kick blocking specialist!

We were average/slightly above average. My senior year we lost in the first round at state.

Visited Midland Lutheran in Nebraska for football, but chose to go to ISU instead. (have never regretted it, either!)

#2 guard and pitcher/shortstop for a really bad 1A school

Today, my position is that of proud father of 2 sons who go small forward/800 M state qualifier/pitcher/outfielder and fullback/forward/pitcher-catcher.

Football-Played wr/db my freshman year. Didn't play my sophomore or junior year. Senior year I practiced at qb, rb, te, wr, ol, and dl. Had the best hands on the team but since we needed size(I was 6'3 and weighed around 190) on the line I got stuck at LT and didn't enjoy it very much but loved playing with my friends. Played for a bad 1A school.

Basketball- Played as a wing player freshman-junior year, was money from 3. Was mostly a reserve on varsity my sophomore and junior year. My senior year I got moved to post and made the all conference team.

Track- Ran my freshman, sophomore, and senior year. Literally ran every distance, my best distance was the 800 though.

2A Varsity I played offensive tackle my sophomore year. The rest of the years I played center, defensive tackle, and something on every special team. My junior year I rarely came off the field. My senior year I didn't have to play kickoff or return

Four-year starter at quarterback, state champions, All-American, all-state, homecoming king, valedictorian and did the nasty with the principal's twin daughters on the 50-yard line.

Just trying to beat rebecacy.

Went to a good 2A school then moved to 3A our Jr/Sr years...ouch

Football: Quarterback and Captain
Track: 400m only relays and 400m hurdles / fastest time was only 51 split that is why only got to be on relays and Captain
Baseball: outfield but mostly rally cap administrator

Only in small town Iowa could you play so many sports as a 5'8" 150lb average athlete .. the good ole days

I'm so old my Junior year we were still playing the single wing. Played both offensive and defensive end. I started because I was the least terrible of the ends not because I was any good.

Played safety or corner from 7th grade until Junior Year. Then, I tore my ACL my Junior year. Coach told me I was a lot slower when I came back my Senior year and stuck me at a OLB/DE spot. That was quite the adjustment. Went from being able to see the whole field to only being able to see the #'s on the offensive tackle within a second of the snap.

But we won a state championship my senior year, so it was all worth it.

In addition to my football exploits, I threw in track, was a catcher/DH in baseball, All State in Individual and Group speech (Radio and TV news) and was first chair trumpet and had the lead in all our musicals. Played football in college but went on a music scholarship and got to tour Europe twice with the Wartburg choir.
Small Schools FTW!

played guard during our run to the State quarters as a freshman. Basketball had to play center because our team was very tiny.

Baseball was easily my best sport. Hit .537 for half my senior season. Was hitting around people with .100 averages, which people started noticing that so it sucked. ended with around a .370. Also played outfield

Bastard. I hit .360 something, I think.

Also started at center in basketball.

And the older I get, the better I was.

ANyone here from a small school that played QB with a neck roll because you were also the MLB?

No neck roll, but I played both ways at QB and DE or DT for a 3A school. At QB I was 6-1, 215lbs and was bigger than all of my O-line. Had a couple of them around 165-180 lbs. I got the heck beat out of me but I learned to get rid of the ball quick. :spinny:

I played TE at Ankeny. We took full advantage of the TE being an extra lineman. My TE coach played football for Earl Bruce.

9-man FB story...

I played weakside DE, and it is very common for the weak-side DE in 9-man FB to drop into pass coverage (which you see more and more of in 11-man FB nowadays). So, a set was called where I had to drop back in to pass coverage, and I got an interception. We had gotten a new coach for offense (who was also the MBB coach), and he came from 11-man. As I was coming off the field, the offesnive coach came over and asked me what I was doing back there, and proceeded to "tell" me that I needed to get tougher at fighting off blockers. Not withstanding the fact that had an offensive lineman blown me that far into the secondary there would have been a penalty for illegal man downfield, the head coach came over and told him that's where I was supposed to be.
