Some good picks and some solid thought but man I still think I disagree with most of you. I think the ramifications go far beyond a "w". CMC is changing the culture internally but unless and until these games are won, ISU is nothing but a nice little 8 win after thought that will get a 1 minute plug as they transition over to the big boys.

Maybe a loss propels us to unseen heights but I think we've had our scare with UNI and Drake. A win is a national culture changer IF we can finally capitalize on our success.

Every game listed as bigger than this game were losses (for the most part) so we need to start winning in the dark, in the light, in the margins, on the field during AmesDay with a national audience against our hated rivals against the ******* hawks. Win in the bathroom, the bedroom, in the kitchen, in the mother ******* kids play room.

I don't get caught up in the smack talk but its beyond ******* time to destroy these pussies by ******* the living **** out of these **** holes, cutting off their tits and cocks and ram feeding them down their **** stained **** gargling throats.

So if that game was a prove it game we should of won Texas, should have won Alamo bowl, and SHOULD destroy this routine run-of-the-mill B10 crap team.

You can't prove it once - you have to continue proving it to everyone.

CMC has continued to prove that he can get ISU to improve and turn into a nice football team by October, and continued to last year with another solid October and November, especially with dominating another Top 10 ranked team in WV.

Winning with Game Day there is fun but again, I couldn't even tell you who was on FS1 last week, or even where CGD was...and I watched it!

The culture changer would be to start to ascend earlier, which will be needed as Baylor's going to be a tough game.

I separate it out. Game day like others have said is the more important event we’ve had. I’d say game was the Alamo bowl. We’ve had a lot of games before the Big 12 title game and never capitalized. At the Alamo it gave us national attention just like game day will do. Game day is just on a bigger stage

I think Saturday's game is the biggest game we've had. VERY few people agree so my questions:

What was the biggest game.
What was the result of that game.
What impact did it have on the trajectory of our program over time.

We have had more than a few "statement" games that we've either crapped the bed, or failed to capitalize. I think Saturday could be a defining moment in the CMC era with a win. Nationally televised game. Multi-hour lead-up for that national audience. Ranked opponent and our bitter rival. We lose and we've merely lost a game. We win and large swaths of the college football public, and recruitable athletes, and national media take notice and we get lots of publicity.

All of these games were after the Majors era and were bigger in terms of importance. Trying not to duplicate what has been mentioned- several have
1976 ISU @ #16 Okie State for Orange Bowl Birth L 21-42
1976 ISU vs #9 Nebraska for 1st place in Big 8 with one game to go. W 37-28
1976 ISU vs #3 Oklahoma L 10-24
1977 ISU @ Iowa (rebirth of rivalry 40 plus years in the making. The hype exceeded this game- we just did not have social medial to document it. L 10-12

1977 ISU @ #9 Nebraska W 24-21
1977 ISU @ #6 Oklahoma for 1st place in Big 8 L 16-35
1981 ISU vs Iowa ( first Iowa visit to Ames in over 40 years) W 23-12 This game was at least equal to this years.

2017 TCU and OSU games meant more than this Saturday

I agree with this 100% BUT also think this game is way bigger of a deal than people are trying to play it off. 1) the hype. Probably will be the most watched Cy-Hawk game of all time. 2) win this game and go 7-2/8-1 in conference play and we’re talking BCS bowl (potentially playoff with a conf championship but I won’t get too ahead of myself) Lose this and go 7-2 in conference play and no chance at a huge bowl. Yes, conference games mean more as far as a title goes, but you’re kidding yourself if you’re trying to downplay the impact it has either way

I gotta be honest here I disagree. Obviously I want to win, but if we don’t win it’s not the end of the world, this team has way more they can accomplish

I don't care about beating Iowa (I mean, I want to)
I care about winning a conference crown. I want that before I die.

Getting woodshedded like Gwenyth Paltrow trying to earn an oscar at Oklahoma in 2002 was pretty huge....like bad huge. Mac just never could sustain the assitants to take it to the next non-Boise elevation level.

Losing to the Nebraska coach with TMJ disease circa 2005 kinda sucked....again, we were on the cusp of doing well, but just went back to under-achieving. We had a defense that freaking rocked that game and deserved better.

Libertybowl Bad...there you go FinalFour. You feel complete? That wasted 5 years of our lives....and I was right.

Libertybowl Good....Positive, huge win. We always get a tough matchup. Kempt gets free hickory park for life.

1998 CyHawk will never be forgotten for one of the Biggest and best.

The 2006 or so road game at TAM is pretty obvious. I am sure that has been re-lived in this thread.

I want to include 2011 Okie State.....great, but so squandered. We'll just call it the biggest and best and appropriate use of Sweet Caroline.

One more negative, bad Big game.....imagine that kick against Alabama going through for the Independence Bowl? We were the better team, the better program at that point.....but the dangling dong of destiny turned the coaches over so fast that we could not sustain...and I am sure a win there may have changed the course of events.

One more positive Big game. Triple Overtime 2011 Cy Hawk......Big. I can watch that over and over.

What does that have to do with my answer to the question that @Jerms posed?

Yes, ISU - NU 1976. That was a huge game in Ames. And we controlled the entire game.

.... Not counting games that were big because we won, but were games we were thinking were big games beforehand ...

When I noticed the thread, that segment of your post is how I interpreted the question. I thought it could apply to games that were either W's or L's (as many have posted), but not strictly after-the-fact.

This one immediately came to mind for me. Top ten ranking and a Heisman contender at QB with a chance to move to even greater heights.

The biggest game we won was probably the Insight Bowl against Pittsburgh in 2000. First bowl win, and broke a long drought in bowl appearances.
Long Drought...I agree 22 years is a LONG time between Bowl Games.....and BTW, Thanks Pittsburgh....for our 1st Bowl WIN

At the time of the game it was 02 Nebraska. Considering how much they dominated us and how great they were before that season, that win really put Iowa State on the map at midseason until a few weeks later in Norman. It was over after the blocked punt whiff in the end zone.

Two suggestions for “biggest game in ISU history”.

A. Upsetting OSU. They were ranked #2, right?
That showed what we can do.

B. Beating OU two years ago. Ditto above.

Make that “biggest game thus far in ISU history”— which vs Iowa Saturday is not even a contender for.

However, having GameDay in Ames is certainly a front runner for biggest event in ISU athletics history. Alas, that event will conclude at 11AM, and the game is a separate entity entirely.

Not least, since it is on an entirely different, non broadcast/OTA network. ABC or even Fox, and it might be different—in terms of visibility.
