This game in 1996. My grandmother (rest her soul now) took me. I was 9.

AMES, Iowa--Cory Wedel's 41-yard field goal in overtime as Wyoming rallied from a 15-point deficit for a 41-38 victory over Iowa State.

Trailing 38-23 midway through the fourth quarter, the Cowboys (2-0) scored a pair of touchdowns to force overtime. Marcus Harris caught a 12-yard touchdown pass -- his second of the game -- from Josh Wallwork and Greg Kuhn caught the two-point conversion to close Wyoming within 38-31. Len Sexton's three-yard scoring run with 1:53 left tied the game at 38-38. Wallwork passed for four touchdowns.

Heisman Trophy candidate Troy Davis scored on a pair of touchdown runs from one yard out to help the Cyclones (0-1) to a 21-7 lead.

We had seats right next to the student section. They were a little rowdy.

We left after the third quarter, thinking we had the game in the bag, and obviously Iowa State happened. We heard it on radios while walking through the lots.

Got my Cyclone fandom started off on the right foot.

Miss you, Grandma June.

That game was brutal. Clarence Gilbert is forever on my irrational hatred list.
For whatever reason, I watched that game from my grandparents house. I was fighting back tears when we lost and my grandpa, in his typical harda$$ fashion common with guys of that generation, told me to quite moping, it's just a game haha.

I grew up a Badger fan in Iowa, so I always had a mutual hatred for the hawks at the very least

My first memories were in the early 00's with the Sage, Seneca, Tinsley, Fizer teams but I was mostly a fan by association through the 00's. I went to a few Chizik football games when I was in HS.

My freshman year was Paul's 2nd year/Fred's 1st year. That's when I'd say my "Cyclone clock" really started.

Only games I can remember crying after were Michigan State. And Hampton - I think I'm still messed up from that one.

First memory of ISU - my first Iowa State game in Ames, ISU v Colorado. I remember thinking that I was watching the Saints because they had gold helmets with a black logo I couldn't make out. Got a picture with Cy.

First feeling of truly being a fan - When my dad came down on a Saturday morning when I still didn't follow sports that intently, and him being so pumped up about the Iowa St.-Iowa game that day, and him playing the fight song over the speakers on repeat, I believe it was 2002 when they won in Kinnick. I Remember being so excited and then them winning on top of it, sealed it for me.

3rd grade. I was riding the bus and almost no one was left on it because we were near the end of the route (rural Iowa). One of the 7th graders asked me who I rooted for. I said I didn't know. He said I would root for ISU or he would beat my ***. I said OK.

Doing some maths tells me that was probably 1984.

When I got to ISU my freshman year.

Before that, growing up in eastern Iowa, I was a typical default Iowa fan. Liked those BJ Armstrong teams, and Iowa TEs. NO LONGER!

Parents had no affiliation either way.

That was my first game in the student section, I remember it well. I believe it was one of the first ever college overtime games, as the overtime rules went into effect that year and that was week one.

As to the OP question: I fall into the birth category. My parents are both alums, along with my grandfather (when it was ISC), at least 12 aunts and uncles, 2 siblings, 7 first cousins and too many to count extended family.

1992 #7 NU-ISU game in Cyclone Stadium.
I grew up more of a Husker fan since college football on OTA was extremely limited in eastern Illinois back then. Dad grew up just north of Omaha and we would visit grandparents, aunts/uncles and cousins for holidays out in Nebraska. I still am a homer and miss the OU/NU game on Thanksgiving weekend as that was I knew that my dad would be watching. Realignment has killed a lot of good rivalries....

Was a Freshmen in 1992 and wore my Husker sweatshirts to the game. Remember Marvelous Marv Seiler faking the inside dive and pivoting back to the middle of the field and taking off for what seemed forever. Tackled just short of a TD but helped to seal a 19-10 win over a Frosh Tommie Frazier and the #7 Huskers. First experience rushing the field (after flipping my sweatshirt inside out) and watching the goal posts being torn down and carried off to Lake LaVerne...

I made trips down to Ames since my oldest brother went there in 77. Including myself, 6 of the 8 kids in my family went to ISU. Being the youngest, I have helped move more **** in and out of Helser, Friley, Towers, Schilletter Village and old and new RCA than some moving companies.

I remember walking the floors of Helser one Saturday morning when I was 6. My brother's roommate had passed out in the hall and the guys on the floor had propped him up against the wall, put a sombrero on his head, an empty beer bottle in his hand and painted a big ol' mustache on his face.

I knew that I was destined to be a Cyclone.

My parents took me to my 1st game as a kid and this was the guy I remember being "our guy".
I still remember my dad getting us fired up about going to see him play.
That's where it all started for me.

North College Hill grad Dwayne Crutchfield starred for the Cyclones in the early 80’s before embarking on an NFL career. (Photo: Thanks to Iowa State University)

We used to be a host family for recruits. Yeah they used to have those. Dwayne stayed at our place. When he was going to Iowa State he came down to our birthday party for my brothers and gave us a jersey.

For the record we hosted peanut fryer, Irving fryers little brother and he ended up at Nebraska.

1984 when I started school.

Was completely bought in watching Jeff Braswell almost lead us to an upset of #2 Oklahoma in the first game ever played under lights at JTS.

Was blessed to be a part of the beginning of Hilton Magic with Johnny Orr, Barry Stevens, Grayer, Hornacek, etc.

I’m still mad Braswell got screwed by the NCAA

In 2003 or 2004 when my brother took me up to Ames for the Big 12 Wrestling Championship to watch, Oskaloosa native and a distant cousin of mine, Aaron Scott wrestle. I got to meet some of the wrestlers and got Cael Sanderson's signature. I had just gotten into wrestling a couple years prior and seeing how good the ISU team was made me like them. Wrestling made me tough when I wasn't. I got my ass beat regularly, but seeing the cyclones wrestle made me believe I could be better than I was.

That experience made me like Iowa State and follow them in sports. But I really started to love the cyclones in 2007 when my brother snuck me, his sophomore in high school kid brother, into the student section at Jack Trice. I think we got rocked, but I had a ton of fun both at the game and in the dorms that weekend.
