I think hogue struggling with rebounding has a lot to do with him playing primarily the 4 instead of the 3.

1 rebound in the past three games. That includes a game against Lamar.

I have no doubt that playing the "4" is responsible for a reduction in boards, but 0, 1, and 0 is definitely a funk.

Hogue has not looked like his usual beast self . . . with arms and legs flying around. Plus, he has had some struggles getting into the flow of the game, missed layups, not been able to handle a few passes he typically grabs, and has lost the ball while trying to make plays. Nothing huge. He probably had some of these struggles last year, but we just remember because the beast play made us forget about all else as he made lots of pretty incredible plays.
It seems like hogue may have an injury. Last game he went up for one that he normally dunks, but just laid it in. He also got withheld from the dunk contest at hilton madness. Maybe tendonitis or something? Would be a reason for his rebound numbers to be down.

Hogue will rotate in. The three ball is too important to Fred's offense and Naz has really improved his drive penetration this year. Hogue will still get his minutes...may not start though

McKay won't take minutes from any one person. Who gets less minutes will vary from game to game, depending on matchups and who is hot.

I was thinking the same thing. Watching his CCL highlights he was dunking everything. Watching him lay in that running easy dunk made me raise my eyebrows.

Edit.

I realize the CCL isn't the same, but the one thing that should transfer over is the ability to dunk.

Another thing I think can't be discounted is Fred's emphasis on getting off to a fast start. We started slow far too often last year, and Naz being in there as a shooter and bringing energy to start the game is an important factor. Choosing a starting 5 that comes out with energy and helps us jump on teams early is exactly the type of thing Fred would do.

I dunno, if I envision a team that would give ISU trouble, the first thing I think of is one with tall, athletic bigs. McKay likely helps with that weakness better than anyone on the team. Doesn't necessarily mean he starts, but still think he does for that reason.

McKay will definitely be starting by the the time of conference play with the bigger front lines in the Big XII. So, might as well get him as much starting experience right off the bat.

Based on things that Fred and Georges have said I think McKay is going to play starter minutes (maybe while not officially being a starter).

Our match-up puzzle adds another piece.

It'll be very interesting to see how Fred handles this. It is a unique situation that will definitely require a delicate approach. You have a very good team with developing chemistry, and adding another player will inevitably cut multiple people's minutes. I think this team, and our coach, have the right make-up to handle it, but it's definitely a touchy situation. However, if done right, I think we have the makings for the best team we've ever had.

We should be able to keep the three glue guys (Georges, Bryce, Monte) to 30ish minutes.

There's 110 left for the other guys.

How polished is McKays offensive game?

He's pretty skilled, plays above the rim and is a face up, attacking type of player. He's not going to score with his back to the basket like Hogue or Niang but he can get out and run almost like BDJ. He's going to have his share of highlights, at IHCC I saw some amazing dunks from him. Get used to Morris to McKay alley oop.

I watched CFH media presser today and when they asked about McKay he seems rather excited to get him eligible. Fred can be hard to read like that so this tells me that we are going to be very pleased when he hits the court. If we can beat Iowa I have this feeling this team is going to be very very good come McKay.

EDIT: can we please make the Glenn Waterhouse banner smaller. I get it but it takes up 50% of the posts.

I think Hogue gets a shot to move back to the 3-ish player as a starter and see if he can go back to his insane form at the end of last season. It's just sort of odd how down his rebounding #s are. Kane was getting a lot of boards as a guard last year so it's not likely from BDJ's rebounding production but from playing in slightly different positions on the court.
