When to cheer for the Hawkeyes?

I've been having a similar internal debate. I don't normally cheer for Iowa, but don't mind seeing them do well, either. However, I grew up in the western part of the state, with some family that lives in Nebraska that were/are Husker fans. That, combined with lingering bitterness of Nebraska blowing up the Big 12, I normally half-heartedly root for Iowa when they play the Huskers (lesser of two evils). This year, not sure if I can root for Iowa to stay undefeated and potentially prevent a Big 12 team from getting into the playoff... and pretty confident I can't cheer for Nebraska without throwing up in my mouth.

Maybe I'll just root for an asteroid to strike Memorial Stadium on November 27 instead. That would be a win all around, right?

OMG. You want to kill the members of both teams, the coaching staffs of both teams as well as all the spectators? You have some serious issues.

I admit that I'm a bit torn. I want to hate the Hawkeyes at all costs, but is there a point when I should actually cheer for them? For instance, the Huskers will be insufferable if they win. And who wouldn't like to see the Buckeyes crushed? Or take down a top SEC team?

At some point, as much as I hate to admit it, I think it is good for the whole state for the Hawkeyes to do well (and worse for the state if they have a high profile choke like us in BB last year). I'm just not sure what that point is. I don't think I can cheer for them unless they do make it to the playoff. At that point, a win is good for the state, even if it makes Hawk fans even more insufferable. But who can handle them being even more insufferable? I may give myself a ban for even considering it.

Is is there a point when any of you will cheer for the Hawkeyes?

I respect the hell out of their program and wish we could have even a taste of their success, but can never cheer for them.

Seems racist.

And you're wrong. UAB beating ISU was one of the single greatest days that Hawkeyes fans had in 2015.

Nope. You're wrong. Other than the Iowa/ISU game, I root for the Cyclones, and I know a LOT of Hawkeye fans who do as well. I also root for the Drake Bulldogs and the ISU Panthers. I root for all the sports teams of all the D1 schools in Iowa. During the UAB/ISU game, I could tell ISU was heading for disaster by the way they were playing... or rather NOT playing together. It was a sad day for the state. I don't believe most Cyclone fans are represented by all the negative posters here, just like I don't believe most Hawkeye fans are represented by the negative posters at HN.

Anything that brings positive attention to the state is good. And if you can't see that, there's something wrong.

54-23 iowa states opponents record
37-42 iowas opponents record

Not sure how you arrived at these numbers. With both teams having the same number of opponents, I can't figure out how ISU's opponents have played 77 games and Iowa's opponents have only played 69. The numbers could be about 2 weeks old but they still don't match the numbers I found for each team's opponents.

I just went through both teams' schedules and found these numbers against their past opponents (notice how the opponents have played the same number of games):

Iowa's opponents are 50-50
ISU's opponents are 71-29

Iowa vs Nebraska will be the only time I have ever cheered for the cornholers.

Lived in Lincoln from 1978-1982. Exposure to that fan base in a variety of situations makes it impossible to ever cheer for Ne. I will admit though, that their new coach is 1000% more classy than Bo. Upon further review, most coaches would be 1000% classier than Bo.

I don't know when to cheer or not cheer for them. But I'm finding on Facebook this morning that them cheering for snowblowers is a big deal. Every single fan post is about Kinnick snow removal. Hey it's your undefeated team dream season. If defeating the snow is exciting, who am I to judge?

I had to turn off College Gameday. All the Hawk gear/signs was making me sick to my stomach.

I just turned it on to see the Brett Greenwood piece. You don't see coaches choke up often, but seeing ferentz choke up talking about Brett shows you the relationship they have. As much as I hate the Hawks, I'm glad they have a classy coach.

When to cheer for the Hawkeyes? I feel like there's a very simple answer to this question.

Me too. Brought tears to my eyes. I will be rooting for the hawks today. My middle child is an Iowa grad, my other two are at Iowa State. I am a cyclone forever, but what they have done this year is spectacular, and I am rooting for them to go all the way. I believe our time will come.

I can never cheer for Iowa, ever. Their fans are the worst.
