Why don't they remove the border from the city/country plate? It looks like they took a license plate and glued it onto a larger plate.

When I buy my next vehicle in a month, definitely want to switch to custom ISU plates. I had just an ISU license plate border and got pulled over on the interstate for it covering part of the county.

Ouch. This makes me appreciate small town Iowa where the police look at the driver or recognize the vehicle and not focus on the plates. My license plates numbers are usually not even readable because they are covered in mud/dirt/manure/gravel/dust 90% of the time. That's just the front, the back plate is usually dented up beyond repair from backing it into an implement tongue.

saw this on facebook.
This makes me wonder why they didn't make it a crowd-sourced competition. It also makes me wonder if they intentionally released terrible ideas in hopes that it would inspire people to come up with better ideas so that they can actually end up using one of those.

With these choices, definitely keeping our natural resources plates. Maybe they should let the Anamosa inmates that make them come up with a design. Certainly would be more original. We might have the only plates with shanks and food loaf.

I could be wrong but isn't a reason for front plates is because it provides a good surface for cops to point their radar guns at? I hope Iowa can drop the front plate.

Yet there are so many vehicles that do not display a front plate (due to no holder as a standard part) and they get away with this. The crazy part is a family members car had a small accident and they had not gotten the front plate back on and they got pulled over and received a warning ticket for no front plate.

As much as I'd like to go Tsoukalos with that conspiracy theory, I think there were plenty of graphic designers that didn't need cajoling in order to submit more professional designs than the ones I-DOT rolled out given an open chance.

I think the state would have had much more positive PR if they went that route rather than announce the design was changing and retreat to their rooms with Microsoft Paint for a couple months. They had nothing to lose.

Since a "submit your design" campaign would have been obviously better in PR considering all the recent state failures that have resulted in the route they took, that makes me believe more than likely Reynolds and Branstad wanted the flag (based on their comments), and some at I-DOT thought differently (because of all the other red/white/blue plates out there).

Nice job guys! You made this poor lady cry!

I'm probably heartless, but this kinda made me chuckle. I'm sure she was "artistically hamstrung by law enforcement" but come on, these are bad. As a graphic designer, you should be able to do better.
Also - toughen up.

If this designer is going to be brought to tears from negative reaction to her designs, she'd better find another line of work.

I think it's one thing to be critical of the designs. If she can't handle it when someone says they don't like the designs, that's one thing. It's another when keyboard bullies start leveling unnecessary insults. Someone thinks it's a poorly done job? Fine. There's no need to be a **** about it.

But if you can't say mean **** about people you don't even know on the internet for no good reason, then why even have it?

I get it and I don't disagree. But I've worked with and around designers for 17+ years and have witnessed some pretty brutal verbal face-to-face smackdowns from clients, in-house sales, etc. Doesn't happen every week, but it does happen. I could be wrong but I'm guessing the designer here is young and hasn't yet developed the thick skin that's a must have in order to make it. The better designers I've worked with usually have a tinge of assholishness to them and can brush harsh criticism aside because they know it's coming from idiots who have no clue what they're talking about. Even if the criticism is really, really nasty they wouldn't be brought to tears. They might throw a chair at them from across the room, but never tears.

I haven't chimed in yet but everyone pretty much echoed my thoughts. The new designs are pretty underwhelming. I get the constraints the designer faced but the new designs are not good. At this point, my useless vote would be to keep the current plates. They still look great even 20+ years later. Pretty clever to put a city skyline in the clouds of a farm.

Yeah, I guess I don't really care one way or the other what my license plate looks like. I honestly didn't think it was that important to people.

I think I saw someone post something almost identical to this, but I thought I'd combine the best elements of each one. I used the Grant Wood inspired rolling hills and trees from option A, the eagle which references our flag from option B, and the city/farm/wind energy theme from Option C (without the silly border on that one).

The only real option would have been to have a license plate physically take the shape of Iowa... like the the NW Territories of Canada does with the bear.
