Why would you write this whole thing up if you don't know the rule? Freshmen are the only players who can play in exhibitions and still be eligible for a non-medical redshirt.

Can a Juco play in an exhibition then red shirt?
That seems to be the litmus test to this argument.

That's a good question. I tried searching the NCAA site, which is a mess of bad links and expired PDFs. I think it's basically a moot point, though, because how often do you bring a JuCo kid in to red-shirt him? I would assume that they are treated like a freshman during their first exhibition games with the new team, but I could be wrong. It wouldn't be too hard to figure out by looking at exhibition box scores, but I can't recall any cases of a JuCo coming in and taking a (non-medical) redshirt for their first season on campus.

White's presence wouldn't hurt, and I hate the inability of NCAA to actually make these decisions in a timely fashion. I mean, what's the delay? I'm sure there's more detail to it than we know, but is it actually that complicated?

I'm not losing any sleep over it, either way. Fans got hung up on Staiger's eligibility, waited a year for the patience to pay off, waited another year for him to "become effective," he had one awesome game, then bolted.

I'm not saying any of that will happen in this case. I just don't want to obsess over it.
Its true that the end results don't often match the anticipated output, but I think Royce is more of a known quantity in recruiting circles than Staiger was. Very highly regarded, and I think his post talents both offensively and defensively is something that fill a void with this team, so I really do think he would make a huge difference. Just wait and hope for the best on that deal I guess.

If one of Kanter's teammates received compensation then he should have to sit out the year shouldn't he, just like Lucca Staiger? Makes no difference what Kanter received according to the NCAA in the Staiger ruling.

They changed the rules about that either this year or last year.
