Some control, but not like we are used to. Not that it's a bad thing as long as they aren't breaking too many things with updates.

Its a new thing for them, who knows, maybe with certain updates, it will allow for more granular control again.

Which, I don't know about others' experiences, but I've encountered multiple instances of Windows 8[.1] having update issues/failing updates. Hopefully 10 straightens that out some. I don't think it's anything I'm doing wrong, mainly because there isn't much to do "wrong" with an automated process.

There have been concerns expressed about whether Microsoft could then use those automatic updates to put ads onto your desktop similar to the pop-up you get to upgrade to Windows 10. Don't know of this was a real possibility or coming from the tin foil hat folks, but it seems that a free upgrade is out of Microsoft's norm. There's a lot of questions around their motives.

I bought a new laptop last year with Windows 8.1. Apparently after a recent update, it completely screwed up my keyboard and mouse. When I'd fire up the laptop, I couldn't do a single thing and it would stay on my lock screen. Geek squad took care of the problem for the most part but I realized the next day that some buttons still didn't work. I took it back in and they said I'd have to pay for tech support which costs 200 bucks for the year because of how much the software update messed it up. They said it targeted my specific Toshiba model. So yeah, I hope 10 runs much smoother.

I've had to hard restart my desktop w/Windows 8.1 just to try and get it to update.

So who is going "All In" when Windows 10 is released tomorrow? I have my copy reserved but I think I may wait a bit to actually install it until we see what the initial reactions are and what bugs might get exposed once the user base increases significantly over the next few weeks. This issue in particular is a bit concerning: http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/07/27/windows-10-automatic-update-security-problems/ especially since I run a NVidia graphics card. Hopefully there are some tweaks to Windows Update coming that will allow you to pick and choose what installs and when. I understand why they want to force updates through but you'd think that they could hold off on 3rd party hardware drivers and allow users to choose what to do with those themselves.

Laptop: as soon as they will let me.
Production Machine: as soon as SP1 is released or before 1 year of W10 release.

I'll upgrade on my laptop as soon as I can. At work? Not so much.

I had high hopes for Windows 10. No longer. The mandatory updates and lack of multimedia is a deal killer for the present time for me. Hope to stay with Windows 7/8 as long as I can.

I'll probably update my surface pro sometime in the next couple weeks. My work machine probably won't see windows 10 ever. My next one might depending on how long it takes to upgrade (typically 5 years). We still have about 50 xp machines on the production floor here.

I use a lot of 3rd party media apps so the lack of Windows Media player amongst things doesn't bother me. From what I have heard this is the "final" release of Windows and that they will update the OS much like Apple does with iOS going forward which is a big improvement.

Why oh why? I'll be forced to upgrade, perhaps, given my track record to Windows 10 sometime around 2025. Still have XP on the desktop and it works fairly well. It is interesting that Microsoft has finally given up and forcing people to buy the new software and this is coming with very little fan fare.

Think I'm going to put 10 immediately on my daily use/beat around computer. Will report back with my findings when that times comes.

I haven't had a problem with Windows since Vista, which is nearly 10 years ago. Windows 7, 8, and XP all have been stable for me. I didn't really like the UI of 8 but a few mods took care of that issue.

Be careful with that. XP is less and less secure by the day.

Do you give your computer doses of silver to protect against all the new security holes?

I run 8.1 on my home desktop and other than getting a mod for the start menu and turning off the annoying tiles it's been a very solid and stable OS for me. I know people that curse 8 saying they wish they had just ordered 7 instead but if MS can get 10 to take the best from 7 and 8 and add to that it should hopefully be a solid OS. Everyone says it's every other release of Windows MS is either hit or miss on and since 8 was the supposed last "miss" this one should be a hit.
