Your pretty naive aren't you. Microsoft has still been sending out XP updates since they realized lots of business' still use the software. If your not a moron, run a good anti-virus and maleware program its fine.

Ouch. But, anyway, what you say is true: the best defense against viruses and attacks is common sense. I'll be totally honest, the laptop I'm on right now doesn't actually have any antivirus or security software on it whatsoever. Haven't for a while, hasn't been a problem at all.

You should probably avoid using any ATM as well if you are so concerned as many are running a basic version of XP.

It's barely a basic version of XP. It's more like "started out as core XP, then almost entirely rewritten to fit the ATM needs". Example, Mac OSX is basically a UNIX/Linux distro, but most people don't view it that way due to how it's fundamental operations differ.

I know it has downloaded updates in the past week. Can't check now. You should probably avoid using any ATM as well if you are so concerned as many are running a basic version of XP. My poor old desktop is hardly a major concern.

Ok, I'll be interested to hear what the latest security update is, and its ID. Out of curiosity, I fired up an XP box of my own, here, and checked for updates, so I'll be curious to see if your versions match what's available to me. Perhaps you've got a secret Microsoft update site that I don't know about.

As far as ATM's go, no I don't use them.(does anyone anymore?) That's kind of the point I'm making. You're taking a risk by sticking with XP.

Depending on what malicious content got on your machine you might not even notice it if you aren't running anti-virus or anti-malware programs. If it's a program that's hijacking your web browser you'll probably be able to tell, but what if it's just a keylogger sitting in the background phoning home?

http://www.zdnet.com/article/registry-hack-enables-continued-updates-for-windows-xp/

From what I've read, even the last out of band patch issued by microsoft was available via this method.

Yeah, and I'm positive that's what argent's doing...

not to mention:
"Late Monday we received a statement from a Microsoft spokesperson:
We recently became aware of a hack that purportedly aims to provide security updates to Windows XP customers. The security updates that could be installed are intended for Windows Embedded and Windows Server 2003 customers and do not fully protect Windows XP customers. Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP. The best way for Windows XP customers to protect their systems is to upgrade to a more modern operating system, like Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

Millions of people? It helps though that many (most?) ATMs that use XP use XP Embedded which still does have support through the end of the year at least.

These programs don't just attach themselves out of nowhere, they come from something. Common sense prevents that "something".

Like getting malware from an advertisement on an otherwise completely reputable site? You don't have to be an idiot browsing to shady sites hosted in China or wherever to end up with malware or a virus.

That's how most of it happens. The rest of it is cut down by firewalls and the like.

ATMs run an embedded version of XP which is still receiving updates.

I guess I haven't used an ATM in ages. I take that back. I think I bought stamps a while ago.

What are those?

right? My wife told me we had to send out "thank you cards" to attendees of my daughter's birthday. I didn't know what those were either.

You mean the e-card things, right? From that one website?

... We might not be on the same wavelength, here.
