It looks like a ripoff that doesn't function well.
Well, I agree with the ripoff part, but I would disagree that OS X doesn't function well. The jiggling icons are off the rail..

Don't let Cyber troll you.

Not to derail the thread completely...but I made the switch to Linux (Mint variations) last spring and can't see myself going back to Windows again in terms of home computers.
Same here for my home computers, except I'm using Ubuntu. However, I'm sure that work will always be stuck on Windows, so I've got to keep up with what's going on with it...
And what is so difficult about moving your mouse to the top right corner and using "search" to find your program? Or the pinned shortcut to your C drive?
Yep...same situation here. Really enjoy digging through different Linux stuff...but I always comeback to Mint.
Work still has me on XP - so at that rate I'll give a review of Windows 10 in 2024.
Um, dude, that is a MAJOR security risk if you're not running it in an embedded mode. You need to tell them to get that updated ASAP. If you have software that only runs on XP, you can virtualize it via Virtual Box, Virtual PC, etc. But NO ONE should be running XP unless absolutely necessary (and that computer should NOT be connected to the internet).
A lot of places still run XP. The company I am at is very slowly rolling out 7 now. Last year we were just happy to go from Lotus Notes to Outlook.
Yeah, i know... but they shouldn't be... if you have any sort of an IT department that is competent (or forward thinking management), that should have been completed about 2 years ago.
And i feel very sorry for you to have to use Lotus Notes for that long... I have a very big love / hate relationship with outlook. It pretty much rules my life now -> but some of their decisions are so stupid like ctrl+F is not "Find".. WTF? From what i read, we can thank Mr. Gates for that one as he wanted it to be "Forward" instead.
Today i used the calculator, notepad, word, excel, internet, Labview, Kinect SDK, adobe, etc. I can't pin that many and it's annoying to have to search for the calculator in the app section.
Plus, Labview generated about 50 apps that completely make the app page useless.
Yeah, I use a lot of mint at home, but i just can't stop using windows... Being a keyboard power-user, i don't really have a problem with either as i can navigate completely around either with nothing but the keyboard (especially after downloading windows power shell).
BTW -> i'm definitely a power user and I LOVE windows 8. It's just different in a good way. Before windows 8, we haven't really had anyone try something "completely" different in an OS in a long time (probably back to the original Mac OSs like OS 7). And don't even get me started on Mac OSX... it marked the end of the "old" Mac which was a bad thing.
Do you/have you used any other distro's based on Linux? Any you particularly like?
I am actually starting to like Windows 8 - I think people are just reluctant to change - They ***** and moan instead of trying it out.
They skipped 9 because windows 95 and 98 both start with a 9 and could cause compatibility problems with poorly coded software.
It's probably by design that it's like that. If you look at their release version numbers, it's:
Windows 7 NT 6.1 Windows Vista NT 6.0 Windows XP NT 5.1 Windows 2000 NT 5.0 Windows 98
NT 4.1 Windows 95
NT 4.00
It looks like Windows 8/8.1/10 are still following 6.2, 6.3, 6.4 version numbers, but it seemed like Windows 8 was just Windows 7 that they tried to make it Xbox/Tablet friendly. They're almost releasing an earlier version so that they can just fix the bugs and call it a different OS.
Windows 95 and 98 were not part of the Windows NT tree. They (and Me) were the tail end of the consumer Windows 3.1 tree.
There actually was a Windows NT 3, 3.51, and 4 prior to Windows 2000 and that tree of OS's were meant for businesses rather than consumer use.
And THANK GOD microsoft made the decision to merge those two windows cores, makes everything a LOT easier now![]()
Absolutely. It's great to have consumer cruft and various other garbage in the OS that you need to run business applications on.![]()
