We got the freezing rain during the morning commute. Wasn't too bad but it was definitely getting worse.

I was hoping to go to the gym after work tonight but IDK. I suppose the main roads should be better than the back roads I'd take to get home...

Not exactly sure.
I need to get to a town about 24 miles north. I have a blacktop that I can go basically straight there. Our county doesn't do anything with icy roads so it's a crapshoot on them. The county north, presalts and stays on top of stuff. It's half for each county.

Or I can make this drive 45 miles and stay on state hiways which are usually in good shape.

Trying to decide how much to risk.

You probably wouldn't save as much time on the riskier route due to conditions. I'd take the longer route. Less stressful on the trip too.

Another busting storm? Seems like a lot of the local news stations were projecting precipitation right now, and nothing is showing up on the radar.

I was just out for a meeting at work and it isn't really even drizzling any more. Pavement is just wet (guessing a lot of salt is down). I am wondering if the snow is going to come, or if this is a dud storm. Not complaining if it is, but not sure worth all the school closings.

Typical 5 minute drive to work took 15 and the parking lot is a skating rink in South Waterloo. Fairly heavy freezing stuff coming down right now.
had a short period of some freezing rain move through this morning here at work north of Manchester and that's been it so far. some fog/mist right now. still none of the predicted snow fall.

yeah all the eastern Iowa stations were predicting snow to start at 7am here and so far just the above has happened.

It has hardly begun. I got to thinking about these threads this morning. Do you demand to know exactly where a tornado path will be and when it will happen hours or days in advance? If so go ahead and wrongly flame away. If not consider having the same patience or understanding for winter weather.

I know this is the 1/22 storm thread, but temps on Thursday are going to be -14 with wind chill approaching 40 below.

Agreed...this storm is just now starting to show where the initial snow areas are going to set up as the surface low is still getting organized in SE Kansas. Like most winter storms, this one will have a favored area of heavier snowfall that the models have a hard time resolving...even 6 hours prior to the event. Watch the radar trends and use that verify that a forecast is on track.

Absolutely not, I know forecasts change all the time. Winter storms are a little bit different from a tornado, though, because their effects are so widespread.

I was just inquiring more about the timing today so I know when to leave work. I love snow storms, but only if I'm safe at home. I had a close call last year that ended getting my car wrecked (wasn't at fault for the accident), so every possibility I encounter where I might be driving through snow now drives my anxiety through the roof.

The snow isn’t going to start until this afternoon and then end tomorrow morning. The timing has been off a little. That’s it so far

Exactly. What I read this morning was snow to start in the metro late this afternoon with the heaviest starting around 4pm.

I heard the heaviest snow starting around 3:00 today. I was just thinking that it would have done a bit more by now. I understand things change, so I am not faulting the weather forecasters.

On a side note, I always think that it is funny that when the weather people get it right, all of the stations are out tooting their own horns and saying how great their coverage was and that they were so on top of telling it was coming. When they are wrong though, nothing but crickets.
