I believe it was in the Clemson game that the announcers said Purdy had never thrown an interception when ISU was in the red zone. That was a remarkable stat. But I think it also showed that we don't throw the ball enough when we get in the red zone. We are too predictable. Lots of runs but not enough misdirection.

I've watched Baylor and KU fake out Colby Reeder 3 or 4 times with play action or misdirection inside the red zone. There's a good chance if ISU was better in the red zone we would have won 9 or 10 games in each of the last 6 seasons. Better ST would have sealed it!

Wasn't Baylor last year a red zone int?

Or maybe he was just outside of it when he threw it.

Either way, ISU doesn't just want to put the hammer down when it gets down there.

Why was Dekkers lined up in shotgun before they changed their mind? They sneaked it easily earlier in the game. ISU needs an analytics guy to help them get over the hump in close games. We would have had 9 or 10 wins in each of the last 6 seasons if Campbell won his share of one score games.
I agree with this. Most fans do not expect to win all the one score games, but you should win some of them and we are not doing that. It is very frustrating.

I thought we signed the top kicker in the nation. Or is that next year's class? You'd think with one of the top kicking gurus in the sport in our backyard we could get this thing figured out.
The player you are thinking of was Cole Becker, he decommitted and went to Colorado, of all places, and is in his second year. He has been pretty good on anything <40.

I was at the game and couldn’t see anything but what happened to Brock?

Norton didn’t play but did he travel with the team? What about Verdon? He played great against Baylor.

I hated the call. But I do have to wonder if the decision is different had J Brock been playing today.

Silas did a nice job picking up short yardage and Dekkers is built for a sneak.

If things were more succinct fundamentally ISU's not even in the position because Hutch turns up field and gets the first down.

The difference between KU and ISU is that KU plays like they thrive on a challenge.

Campbell said post-game that Norton was hurt in practice this week.

Anyone have a video of dekkers yelling at CMC? I didn't catch that during the game.

it was a 50/50 call and we got it wrong and lost. i would like to think we can make a chip shot field goal on turf with no wind.

I think the thing people forget about is, its Iowa state football. we probably would have went for it and had a false start. or got the first down and thrown a pick 2 plays later.

Yeah with the way our offense was playing, I think it's probably more likely we fumble or throw a pick rather than win the game if we got the first down.

I don't think going for the field goal was the worst call ever. It's just unfortunate it ended the way it did.

I've never seen a team in a similar position make the call that Campbell did. A QB sneak there gets a first down 98 times out of 100. Perhaps we do get a false start. I would seriously consider going for it on 4th and 5 rather than having Gilbert try to make a career long 41 yarder.

We're all frustrated. But I agree with you. And your last couple.

Rant. Until the next rant. Your household must be a joy to live in.
I just save up my rants for online actually because I know how to direct irritation in ways that dont effect my IRL relationships as grown adults should

Thanks for the personal attack though! Much appreciated. You ever get sick of falling on your sword for our coaches? You did the same for Rhoads and Prohm

Agree on the analytics. A QB sneak is successful, what, 80% of the time? 90%? I can’t imagine Campbell had 80 or 90% confidence that the kicker would make the kick. Plus, playing for OT where we could easily lose on another missed kick instead of playing for the win is so passive and is no way to consistently win teams with middle of the road talent.

I think I'm still leaning to the choice to pass on ISU's last drive in 2017 at KSU as the worst call/decision.

Comey was getting nice yards and ISU just needed a first down on iirc a 2nd and 3rdish. CMC was visibly pissed as he could be seen asking 'why the **** did we pass it?' or similar.

The horrible PI flag pick up and KSU not getting called for offsides, etc. were all rob jobs but ISU avoids it all by just going with what's available.

Let’s say we go for it and run a moronic play from the shotgun and don’t get it, is everyone crapping on Campbell for not kicking it? I feel like yes

Not after what we had already bore witness to from the kicker in the previous 59 minutes of the game.

Am I thinking of something else or did ISU run a QB sneak under center yesterday to pick up a 4th and short, mid fieldish?

Not sure I hate the call. both missed FGs were so close. There were 30 seconds left and we had no timeouts. If we pick up the yard while running for the first down we're still at like what the 20? And the clock is running. So we spike the ball with 20 some seconds left and then take shots at the end zone or try and get a few more yards and risk running out the clock? Lots of stuff could go wrong or we don't even get anymore yards.
