this. so much this.
we were always able to walk around and just grab tickets from others who weren't going to go. I would bet a large % of tickets go unused just because students are too lazy to transfer them to their friends. If a paper ticket is ending up in the hands of a "non student", who really gives a ****. the ticket is being used and that individual is there cheering on ISU.
also,
CUT IT OUT WITH ALL THE B****A**EDNESS!
Not to say this is the issue with the lack of attendance, but it doesn't help. You pay a $2.00 fee to transfer the ticket, and another $2.00 fee to print the ticket (you must print transferred tickets). Kind of a ridiculous money grab for such a simple process.
____________
As a student who regularly attends games, I have no real issue with the basic thoughts presented in the article. I wish more students were attending, I wish they would be as die-hard as the rest of us; however this article is annoying because it speaks in absolutes and paints a false picture of what excellent fans previous generations were.
"I would kill to watch a team playing like that while I was in college, because I showed up through the GMac/Morgan years" is oft the proof provided as to how great of fans you were as a whole. To those who use this as an argument, your sample size is a total of one. You. Obviously you are more fanatical than the average ISU alum (seriously, you are posting message board called Cyclone Fanatic). Many of your fellow students did not feel as strongly supporting the team as you did. Well guess what? Many current students feel the same way as you do/did, (hence the students camping for 3 different games this year). We are the ones who attend games. We are the ones who encourage friends to come with us. We are the ones who hate to see the upper deck empty. We are what you were. We will be you in a few years, on the outside looking in, wishing more students would attend games.
The point is this: The ratio of crazy fans to total student body is likely equal to where it was before. You are expecting the percentage of wild fans to increase with more success. It doesn't necessarily work like that, since the truly great fans were the ones who attend games regardless of the win total.
Before painting with that broad stroke, consider this: many of those students who you claim to be lesser fans have spent more time waiting in line for ONE GAME (I spent 34 hours for Kansas, and I was certainly not alone) this year than many of you probably ever did throughout your entire college career. This does not reflect on your fanaticism of Cyclone athletics, only the product placed on the court. There are still fanatical students, your wild spirit has been passed down to us (specifically the ones who read/post on this board). We can all agree that it's unfortunate that there are not more of us, but lecturing the current student fanatics is not a good place to start.
tl;dr- Your CF/WRNL post is not reaching the intended audience, it is only frustrating the one who generally agrees with your position.
