There are four qualifying tournaments, each with four teams. Top three teams from each tournament go to the Olympics (12 total of the 16 teams). Tiebreaker is point differential among the tied teams, so it is to your advantage to never take your foot off the gas.
Canada is now 1-1 (beat Hungary, lost to Spain), with Japan left. Japan is currently beating Hungary 30-18. If Japan wins, Canada clinches a spot in the Olympics.
Here are all scenarios:
Canada beats Japan: Canada is 2-1 and cannot be in last place, therefore Canada qualifies
Spain beats Hungary: Hungary is 0-3 and is in last place, therefore everyone else qualifies
Japan beats Canada and Hungary beats Spain:
So the only way Canada is not in the Olympics is if Hungary beats Japan today (unlikely), Japan beats Canada Sunday (quite possible), and Hungary beats Spain Sunday (unlikely).
- If Japan beats Hungary, then Japan is 3-0 and everyone else is 1-2. Canada has a +7 point differential vs Spain and Hungary and therefore can't be in last place (since the point differentials must add up to zero), therefore Canada qualifies
- If Hungary beats Japan, then Japan and Hungary are 2-1 and Canada and Spain are 1-2. Spain beat Canada, so Canada is out.
Wow. You can't discount home court advantage. Now all four teams are 1-1.Hungary did beat Japan 81 - 75.
One thing I meant to mention but forgot: France (Olympic host) and USA (FIBA 2022 World Cup winner) both have guaranteed spots. This means that in those tournaments the lowest team who is not the US or France is eliminated from Olympic participation. There are four qualifying tournaments, each with four teams. Top three teams from each tournament go to the Olympics (12 total of the 16 teams).
And here is that block:
Agreed. Looked like a potential foul on the initial view, but the replay angle showed zero contact. Beautiful block.A thing of beauty, perfect timing, and avoiding any contact. Go Bridge!
Canada is in a rough spot. They lost 86-82 to Japan (Carleton led Canada with 19) and Hungary is beating Spain 39-27 in Q2. Spain probably knows it's clinched a spot in the Olympics now, so I imagine they aren't playing with the same urgency Hungary is.
If Brazil beats Germany by 7 exactly, then... ?
Scenarios if Australia beats Serbia and Brazil beats Germany by 7:If AUS beat SRB and BRA beat GER by 7 points, then there is a three-way tie with the same point difference (0), therefore the higher number of game points scored in the games between them will apply and become the next decisive criteria (see Official Basketball Rules p79 Appendix D13).
56-40 Hungary late in the 3rd.Need to cheer for M. Gustafson to have a big game and help her old school rival.
Think she's been leading Spain in scoring.
