There are four qualifying tournaments, each with four teams. Top three teams from each tournament go to the Olympics (12 total of the 16 teams). Tiebreaker is point differential among the tied teams, so it is to your advantage to never take your foot off the gas.

Canada is now 1-1 (beat Hungary, lost to Spain), with Japan left. Japan is currently beating Hungary 30-18. If Japan wins, Canada clinches a spot in the Olympics.

Here are all scenarios:

Canada beats Japan: Canada is 2-1 and cannot be in last place, therefore Canada qualifies
Spain beats Hungary: Hungary is 0-3 and is in last place, therefore everyone else qualifies
Japan beats Canada and Hungary beats Spain:
  • If Japan beats Hungary, then Japan is 3-0 and everyone else is 1-2. Canada has a +7 point differential vs Spain and Hungary and therefore can't be in last place (since the point differentials must add up to zero), therefore Canada qualifies
  • If Hungary beats Japan, then Japan and Hungary are 2-1 and Canada and Spain are 1-2. Spain beat Canada, so Canada is out.
So the only way Canada is not in the Olympics is if Hungary beats Japan today (unlikely), Japan beats Canada Sunday (quite possible), and Hungary beats Spain Sunday (unlikely).

Hungary did beat Japan 81 - 75.

Wow. You can't discount home court advantage. Now all four teams are 1-1.

Canada v Japan is 8AM CT Sunday morning, followed by Spain v Hungary at 10:30AM.

Full scenarios:
Canada, Spain win: Japan is out
Canada, Hungary win: Spain is out
Japan, Spain win: Hungary is out
Japan, Hungary win: Canada is out

I thought it was coincidental there is exactly one scenario for each team to be out, but then I realized that logically that has to be the case when you have a four-team, three-game round-robin and everyone is 1-1 after the first two games.

One thing I meant to mention but forgot: France (Olympic host) and USA (FIBA 2022 World Cup winner) both have guaranteed spots. This means that in those tournaments the lowest team who is not the US or France is eliminated from Olympic participation.

Both of those teams will be top-three in their tournaments regardless (the US has already clinched it), so it doesn't really impact anything.

Canada is in a rough spot. They lost 86-82 to Japan (Carleton led Canada with 19) and Hungary is beating Spain 39-27 in Q2. Spain probably knows it's clinched a spot in the Olympics now, so I imagine they aren't playing with the same urgency Hungary is.

Need to cheer for M. Gustafson to have a big game and help her old school rival. o_O

Think she's been leading Spain in scoring.

Brazil must beat Germany to be in the Olympics. If they win, there are two scenarios:

Serbia beats Australia: Brazil is tied with Germany at 1-2 and advances to the Olympics due to head to head win.

Australia beats Serbia: Three-way tie at 1-2. Germany beat Serbia by 7 and Serbia beat Brazil by 7. If Brazil beats Germany by more than 7, Germany is eliminated. If Brazil beats Germany by less than 7, Brazil is eliminated. If Brazil beats Germany by 7 exactly, then... ?

If Brazil beats Germany by 7 exactly, then... ?

If AUS beat SRB and BRA beat GER by 7 points, then there is a three-way tie with the same point difference (0), therefore the higher number of game points scored in the games between them will apply and become the next decisive criteria (see Official Basketball Rules p79 Appendix D13).
Scenarios if Australia beats Serbia and Brazil beats Germany by 7:

Serbia beat Brazil 72-65 and lost to Germany 73-66. If Brazil wins 72-65 or less, Brazil is eliminated. If Brazil wins 73-66, Brazil and Serbia are tied for elimination. If Brazil wins 74-67 or higher, Serbia is eliminated.

In that 73-66 case, the tiebreaker is restarted with the two remaining teams, so Brazil would be eliminated due to head to head loss.

tl;dr version: To make the Olympics, Brazil must win and either:
  • Serbia beats Australia, or
  • Brazil wins by at least 8, or
  • Brazil wins by 7 and scores at least 74 points
