They need to go to the RPI thing for the smaller classes. You could still take 32 but youd probably still have 3-5 teams.

If you went down to 16 teams and had a 9th regular season game, some teams that are 5-4 would probably miss out.

Could they do winning record (or 4-4?) as a foremost qualifier then RPI from there?

If you went to 16, that's either just top 2 in district (leaving out teams like Western, Dike, Wilton, Lake Mills), or 8 district champs plus 8 at-larges.

For 8-man, it'd be 10 champs plus 6 at-larges.

Can they opt for this? I'd guess most would want to play.

An injury can happen at any time.
Schools can opt to play a 9 game if they find a neighboring school that also wants to play. Very few do, but there are schools that just want to play one final time. From what I have seen it's generally two schools that know they are not going to make the playoff before the season starts and they cut a deal to play a second time the last week.

But that's why youd use RPI because then a team like WC would get in because of their strength of schedule.

But that where you're going to get teams who miss out on the playoffs who finish 5-4 or even 6-3 as a district runner up, say.

They can. A lot don't. A lot of basketball players and wrestlers don't want to get injured in a meaningless game. A lot of players and coaches just want their season to be put out of it's misery.

RPI can be inaccurate too. How does one know how strong their schedules really are in the smaller classes? My nephew's team was one of the last teams in the 16 team playoff about 6-7 years ago. Apparently they had a really weak schedule even though their only losses were to a ranked team in a class above and a highly ranked team in their own district. They played the eventual state champ in the first round and lost by 6 in a back and forth game. That team kicked the crap out of everybody else all the way to the title. But computer rankings.

Which year was that? RPI didn't start until 2018, and was only combined with the 16-team playoff in the small classes for 2 seasons (2018, 2019).

Couple of revenge games I'm watching, Ankeny Centennial is crushing Waukee Northwest 28-0 in Q3 and North Polk is having its way with Ballard 17-0 in Q4.
