Gator Chop

Back in the Johnny and part of the Floyd era, the band would play right before tip off and the entire hilton crowd would be doing this huge clap, which I guess was the gator chomp. As tip off got closer, the band and the claps got quicker.

I guess I would say that it wasn't copying florida, just a way to Clap in my opinion.

whether it is copying Florida or not, it feels like the gator chomp when we do it in Hilton, and it is the one clap/cheer I ALWAYS refuse to participage in.

Hilton Magic had a game at Kansas State, but he drove himself and stopped to have some beers on the way back.

The 2003 ISU/Iowa game was the first time I saw them do this. I believe there is also another Big 10 team who does the same thing and another team who does the Florida State thing too.

ISU had been doing the chomp since pre-Atlanta Braves. When I was in college (’87-’92) we would do the chomp and sing the Hamms Theme Song to it (“From the Land of Sky Blue Waters …â€￾).

I've never seen it, or participated in it at Hilton, but I've seen Iowa do it since I went with some friends to an Iowa/Minny game at Kinnick in like 2000 or 2001. They do it when they play the star wars theme. I've seen them do it on tv a lot...

Correction - Iowa does not "chomp" to the Star Wars theme, they "chomp" to the Imperial Death March. Iowa doesn't even play the Star Wars theme to my knowledge. The ISU marching band, on the other hand, on occasion does.

Iowa was doing the Gator Chop As early as the second Hayden Fry year. They started doing it to the tune of the imperial march.

When Iowa was #1 in 1985 and Michigan was #2 the game known as as the kick I have on tape. You can see fans doing it then.

They started doing it in the 80's. It was a after a big defensive play. It was supposed to look like Pac-Man eating them up.

Obviously today Pac-Man is kind of lame but a fun enough tradition.

Don't the Hawks do it after they hold someone on 3rd down or maybe it's 4th. They play the music from Star Wars or Battlestar Gallatica.

iowa does it after the d holds the opposition on 3rd down.
