The problem, in part, becomes how you define "cut and dried cases". There have been some convictions of innocent defendants who appeared to be quite guilty given the technology available at the time of trial. I don't know that there is a better system, but our system undeniably does result in the conviction of innocent defendants on occasion (the percentage is not exceptionally high, thank God, but one is too many if that one was killed as a result of a wrongful conviction).

This is a letter written by him at the direction of his attorneys (maybe even dictated to him by his attorneys) in the hopes of leniency during sentencing. Nothing more, nothing less.

Those are hollow words on paper.
He had already plead guilty to first degree. There is only one sentencing option in the state of Iowa for murder 1st and it is life without parole. A letter has no impact on trying to impact the sentence.
