I realize losing close is frustrating but have to remember where we came from. 8 losses by more than a TD the last 6 seasons and only 3 of those by more than 10 points. Just need this young team to get out of their own way. Some painful perspective here but outside of '04/'05 when ISU avoided OU and Texas, the demolition days are over.

This a solid way to put some perspective on the close games that we have had in the Campbell era. To take it a step further, here is a breakdown of the ISU head coaches by percentage of record at various score differentials.

-Mac, Chizik, and Rhoads all lost roughly 1/3 of their games by more than 2 TDs
-Nearly half of the games under Campbell have had a 1 score margin

Getting boat raced in 1 out of 3 games was not fun. It's amazing what Campbell has done so far. Hopefully he can keep it going and help our guys realized that just showing up isn't going to put W's on the board.

The days of going into games feeling like we have no chance is over which is great. Used to be very disheartening seeing Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska on the schedule.

Winning games in college football is very tough. Campbell has the team in every single game. From there it usually comes down to a few critical plays. Sometimes we call the right plays and our guys execute, other times we just don’t have the dudes. Still other times we’ve made crucial mistakes that have cost us. That happens to everybody, but teams like us have a much smaller margin for error

I realize how far away we were from actually breaking through pre-Campbell when I compare our NFL guys in 00s and early 10s to now.

There may be some 4-6 win seasons in there even if CMC stays long term, but at least we've been in striking distance to get the 8-12 win years. A lot of our 6-7 win teams in the past involved a lot of blowout losses where there was virtually no chance at a win those days, that even includes the 9-3 2000 team where the three losses were no doubters. I heard Sage say as much on a podcast recently when someone mentioned the Fiesta Bowl as the second best season and he corrected them it was the best season.

Feels like we are years away from having a season where we were supposed to bring the wood in 21 ... And that just sucks. But it is what it is.

Good perspective. I think what this says is that we have the right staff and the right players on defense, because through all the ups and downs during the Campbell era, tenacious defense has always been a common denominator.

I feel what’s grinding teeth on this board are the struggles on offense in games not against SEMO and Ohio. Jihrel hasn’t been at 100% lately due to lingering injuries, and Dekkers is a sophomore that, despite everyone’s monstrous expectations, isn’t playing like a four year starter for some reason hmm.

Give it time, deliver your judgement at the end of the season.

I get frustrated by the staff's inability to get special teams right OVER and OVER, or how the O-line is usually lackluster when it comes to moving bodies out of the way. However the defense 9 times out of 10 delivers.

That's football. We won't ever get to have our cake and eat it too, but outside of Bama, Georgia, OSU, etc nobody does. I'll take it.

It’s like Rhoads owned stock in the company that made LEDs for scoreboards.

Am I supposed to feel better ... or worse ...after reading the data?
You are supposed to think about how far we have come. Every week players and fans think we are going to win or have a chance at the end of the game. The program continues a steady climb.

I know how far we've come. But we peaked at the Oregon win. We have not climbed since then. Period.

You are correct, the Fiesta Bowl has been the highest point of success for this football program. Also true is that while we haven't slipped back to the point of being non-competitive. Since the Oregon game, only the 2021 Iowa game has been lost by more than 7 points.

No, we haven't been able to reach that new, higher ceiling that we all had hoped for, but the floor for this program under Campbell is so much higher than it was before he took over. That is a perspective that this fanbase needs to remember before we do something stupid and chase off the best this to happen to ISU football since Earle Bruce.

And rarely does a graph of improvement show only upward movement. Small declines, plateaus, more improvements... this is to be expected.

It's easy to get down, I have felt it recently too, but perspective is a good thing.
