While we've got some more specific genre/universe threads already on here where us fellow Cyclones like to talk about movies, TV, books, comics, nerdgasms.... etc, there hasn't been a generic thread that I've seen to just talk about movies outside of those specific genres. Well, here goes. This is the new place to talk about anything movie-related for us big movie fans. Tell us all about what you've seen, what you've heard, what you love, what you hate, and everything in between.

To kick things off, I watched Alita: Battle Angel the other night and wow, I actually really enjoyed that movie. I've never checked out the original Manga, so I came in with no preconceived notions. This was one of those weird movies where I saw the first trailer and thought it looked terrible, but figured I'd grab it at the library down the road and at least give it a shot. I don't think I was the only one either who was turned off by the trailer based on its box office record. Regardless, I found the movie to be wildly entertaining with a great heartfelt performance by its lead Alita character. The world-building was really intriguing as well. This movie was also packed with some new special effects too where some hit well, while others did not. Alita herself, with her weird-shaped head and large eyes is pretty jarring at first, but as you settle into the movie, its kind of crazy about how it eventually all ended up feeling natural by the end. It helped how well they fleshed out her character too. Anyway, it wasn't a perfect movie, but I found it to be one of the most pleasantly surprising movies I've seen in a while. Its a shame we won't likely see any type of sequel due to its poor box office performance, because I walked away wanting more. I'd encourage anyone who enjoys some good fantasy science fiction to give it a shot.

Just watched 'American Factory' documentary on Netflix. It was suggested by someone on here. Really good documentary, the differences between American and Chinese work cultures is crazy.

Really looking forward to 'The Goldfinch' coming out this month. Might be my #2 favorite book of all time. But obviously I'm also a bit scared because there's no way the movie can really do the book the justice it deserves. Some of the casting decisions were, interesting.

I'm also planning on being at opening night tomorrow for IT: Chapter 2. I'm about as far from a horror fan as they come, but I did see and really enjoyed the first IT movie. It helped that the movie wasn't just a horror movie, but rather a coming-of-age movie combined with a horror movie. So, to men, IT was just a scarier version of Stranger Things. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing Chapter 2 even though I'll admit the long run-time is a bit daunting. To prepare myself, I watched the first movie a second time a couple days ago and it scared the crap out of me nearly as much as the first time I watched it. I'm kind of a pansy though, so that might not be saying much.

glad to hear it was good. That was one that peaked my interest with the trailer and original reviews, but I never fully buy into those types of movies. I'll probably watch this on my flight next week now, knowing its entertaining.

Fired up about IT Chapter 2! Won't see it opening weekend, but hoping to catch it by the end of September. Loved the book and loved the first part. Also really enjoyed the 1991 TV version with Tim Curry and John Ritter

I personally cannot wait for “The Irishmen.” Martin Scorsese directing. Starring Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. First time since Casino that DeNiro has been back with Scorsese which is fascinating since they are tied at the hip together.

I'm excited too, but I'm also sure glad it is on Netflix when I even dare to think of its daunting 3 1/2 hour run time. That would be brutal in a theater.

Anyway, I was going to start a thread that was going to be celebratory about movies. I love movies, and we're going to get what I think are a lot of good and interesting ones. I'm only going to talk about ones I'm personally interested in, because lets be honest there are a lot I'm not interested in.

Ad Astra: Brad Pitt in space, trying to find dad, directed by James Grey with apparently amazing special effects.
The Laundromat: Kind of like "The Big Short" but about the Panama Papers, written by Soderbergh.
Gemini Man: Ang Lee movie with Will Smith as an assassin having to face his own clone.
Parasite: Bong-Joon-ho movie, very unique Korean director, I'll see all of his stuff, this one best picture at Cannes.
Ford Vs. Ferrari: Inject it into my veins.
Knives Out: An old school whodunnit murder mystery guys!
1917: Sam Mendes WW1 epic with Cumberbatch and Richard Madden, and I have a niche interest in WW1. Can't wait.

Ford vs Ferrari looks spectacular and there are even already some reviews out there which are very positive. I'm not super into racing, but I can really enjoy racing movies. Rush might be my favorite so far.

I know it's been talked about before, and per Trigger's avi I know its liked. But I finally watched Shazam!, and going in with no expectations, it really surprised me. I enjoyed it the whole time, and a lot funnier than I was expecting it to be.

I am excited to see how The King turns out, on Netflix. I like that line up of actors, and the story of King Henry IV is pretty fascinating to me. I always go into historical movies ( i know its an adaptation of Shakespear's plays ) but I am curious to see how they ultimately decide to go with this one. It could be really good, and Oscar worthy if done right, but that is a big IF.

Ad Astra
JoJo Rabbit
Marriage Story
The Two Popes

Just Mercy

I want to see Ad Astra and The Irishmen

Has anyone seen Angel Has Fallen? I liked the first two movies in the series but I haven't made it out to catch the latest one yet.

I liked the first one enough, but whoof..... I thought the second one was awful. However, I've heard this 3rd one is actually pretty decent.

I thought that at first, but I rewatched it the other day when it came on. It contained a lot of mindless action, but it had its moments. To be fair, I have vastly different levels of expectations for different genres. I'm not going into any action movie expecting to be wowed by the story. There are always plot holes along with a high level of suspended reality.

I'll likely be the poster in this thread to completely avoid once Oscar talk surfaces. ;)

Bad Boys 3 first trailer out today. Not gonna lie, but I think it looks pretty good. I was a pretty big Bad Boys fan back in the day and they seem to be hitting all the notes so far.

It just showed at Telluride I think and the reviews were meh. But it's on Netflix and I'll watch it.

There are several Netflix movies this year that many critics are saying will ultimately end up getting a Best Picture nomination. In the history of the Oscars only one movie has ever been nominated...Roma last year. There is absolutely 0% chance that 5 or 6 Netflix movies make up the total of Oscar Best Pic noms. Zero.

The Irishman and Marriage Story are by far the best bets. I nothing else will make it.
