Quite a conundrum, support the athlete many descendents of former slaves or the boosters many descendents of plantation/slave owners?

I just do not know where you stop digging for the historical origins of things sometimes.

The history of our species is not a pretty one. Our ancestors, even the relatively recent ones, were not peaceful, welcoming, and open-minded people. Go looking for it, and you can tear down just about anything.

There is eventually just nothing left that is not more-or-less from and created by the moral and ethical mores of the recent present. And even those are going to become outdated and retrograde in short order.

Loyal sons forever true
And we will fight that battle through.
And when we hit the line we'll hit it hard,
every yard for I-S-U!

What about the daughters...? What about those who are both or neither?

Oh, we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State
And may her colors ever fly.

At least the school is a girl? Looks like we have men and women covered.

Mollycoddle? Damn, learned a neat, new word today!

Oh...and looks like another Horns Down opportunity!
Was just going to comment on that. Unironic use of the word "mollycoddle" in 2020 is a great way to let people know that your opinion is entirely ignorable. Same goes for "hootenanny" "britches" and "rapscallion".

We have daughters hitting the line hard?

They must be. It's not like we use a different fight song or lyrics for women's sports (or even other men's sports).

Objects and institutions should be "its." A ship's bow is "its bow," not "her bow."

Same deal... "its library," not "her library," for a university.

Or at least, that was how I was taught to write. Treating inanimate objects as female is antiquated.

LOL when I read the comments about Ellinger's leadership qualities. If he was a great leader there would be at least a few teammates standing with him. Or, he would support his teammates and not stay for the song.

People don't always associate TX with the deep south but Central and West TX are extremely racist as a whole. I'm sure there are some big donors who feel they paid for this team and the players should do as they wish.

I'm not sure why you think this guy isn't capable of having a conversation like that

Did you know he's in MENSA?

There's a difference between a coach having good relationships with or relating to college kids, and still acting like one.

Imo the latter rarely goes well one way or another over time.

Texas was literally the last bastion of the Confederacy was it not? It's where the Juneteenth story comes from, Granger's men landing at Galveston in large enough numbers to enforce the rights (freedom) of freed slaves. Until then Texans had been illegally getting away with continuing the practice of slavery.

I always sang this version of the song:

I've been working on the railroad
All the live-long day.
I've been working on the railroad
Just to pass the time away.
Can't you hear the whistle blowing,
Rise up so early in the morn;
Can't you hear the captain shouting,
"Dinah, blow your horn!"

Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow your horn?
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow your horn?

Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah
Someone's in the kitchen I know
Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah
Strummin' on the old banjo!

Singin' fee, fie, fiddly-i-o
Fee, fie, fiddly-i-o-o-o-o
Fee, fie, fiddly-i-o
Strummin' on the old banjo.

which is the melody used by the "eyes of Texas" -- so they couldn't even write their own music

And that song itself had racist origins.

Isn't the Texas Fight Song just a sped-up version of 'Eyes" with some counterpoint and fanfares thrown in for fun?

I would invite you to listen to "Washington and Lee Swing" before you accuse other schools of not writing their own music.

Damn it Sig if this leads to the ISU fight song being changed, I'm going to find a litter of puppies and leave them on your doorstep making sure your SO finds them before you do. ;)
