Why give them the audience? The best thing that could happen would be for no one to even acknowledge them. The psyche of these people are similar to the kid in middle school that gets labeled ADHD, but really just isn't getting attention at home. The reason he'll stick food up his nose and get detention if because he wants the attention.

It's psychological validation for the Westboro people.

Exactly. The bible only talks about love and being non-judgemental a bazillion times . If they claim to be people of God, I don't want to know their god.

There are things that are just plain wrong, and it's fair to state it. The whole Ephesians 4:15 idea of speaking the truth in love, though, runs completely counter to their methodology.

I agree with emagi that actually staging a protest just fuels their fire. They're basically like the bully kid that you can ignore. That ruins their thrill a little bit, and they'll move on.

A counter protest only validates them, not the counter protesters.

Better they stand on the sidewalk and be ignored. Then they will feel non-validated.

Turning the other cheek can actually hurt the one slapping more.

I seriously think the thing that would throw them off the most if a group showed up and treated them really well. Show up with food and be like "I don't agree with you, but hey, here's a sandwich, have a nice day". I really don't think they'd know how to process it.

My guess is that they would say they didn't want your "fag" food and you will burn in hell. I think the best approach would be to get collections of people a block or two on every side of their protest encouraging people to make the short drive around. Or, just have small auto accidents / cars stalled blocking access to the intersection. The smaller the audience and less dramatic the response, the less likely they are to come back.

I really believe these people are the most idiotic people on this planet... They preach the bible and say we are going to burn when they do not know any one of us as individuals... Also about 2 years ago, one of my friends died in Iraq, and they showed up at his funeral to protest saying things like " your friend is burning in hell"... I just find it funny that they are protesting at a veteran's funeral... when the only reason they have the right to do that is because of people like my friend who have fought and died for their rights to voice their opinion... their hypocrisy really upsets me

Actually, they'd graciously accept it and be glad to talk with you. I've actually confronted them a couple times in the past. They are actually very approachable and willing to talk and even listen for as warped as they may be.

But, it's about as effective as trying to talk with a JW or Mormon that comes knocking.

A few years back Westboro protested Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines and the head pastor Mike Householder and staff made them breakfast if I remember correctly. Pastor Mike said it was a very difficult thing to do, but the right thing to do.
