Templeton Rye is ok, but I'd still take Crown Royal over that any day of the week.
Having bartended before, I can totally understand all of the top 5 with the exception of BV. The bar I worked in rarely sold BV, but Jack, "well" Vodkas, and Captain were obvious choices. I've heard BV has been #1 for the longest time. I still don't understand the thinking behind that, but it is cheap, and when you're young, that's all you're worried about.
I had a good chuckle out of this ranking...my dad, a cheap Iowa Hawkeye fan, drinks both the Hawkeye and 5 o'clock vodkas, and makes fun of my wife and I for drinking Absolute or Grey Goose...both of us being ISU alums by the way!
I hate to say this, but your old man is getting the last laugh. Vodka isn't supposed to taste like anything. Good vodka tastes like nothing, and bad vodka just burns more. If you're mixing it, who cares. Any other type of alcohol, and I would agree that the good stuff is better, but not vodka.

you are right vodka shouldn't taste like anything.. BUT vodka. there is a big difference from hawkeye/5oclock and GG or other good vodkas... absolute, not so much
Absolut is good, and not overly expensive. I would never buy a premium top shelf vodka like I would whisky or rum.
you are in for a treat... if you treat yourself.
-keep.

I've tried Effen and the Goose, even Quadro. Just never paid for it.
Get these very cold without ice:
Belvedere or Chopin
-keep
Love me some Sailor Jerry's
I got waaay too drunk on BV before the '01 ISU-Iowa game. I've tried to avoid it since then.
One of my friends would always write "**** the" on any bottle of Hawkeye vodka he bought.
