What's weird is when I saw this title I first thought of the waterloo blackhawks hockey team, which is weird on many levels that chicago didn't come first and that blackhawk down didn't come to mind before it either...

On a whole I find the Blackhawks to be less exciting to watch, particuarly when flying in a straight line. I was however entertained to watch one fly sideways across an airfield one day...

I think it'll be pretty cool. Better than not having anything fly over IMO
I dunno. Those paraglider things are just about as exciting.

We're playing ARMY. Army doesn't have much to fly over the stadium, and I doubt driving an Abram tank to the 50 yard line would go over well

Probably gonna ***** if when we play Air Force it's just an F-16 fly over because it's the most local thing and fly overs generally are done as part of training missions, it's not like they usually fly these things half way across the country to ooh and ahhh you

We had Hornets fly over last year. They flew from halfway across the country. I'd ***** about that if it was Air Force, though.

The convenient flyovers for Iowa are mostly F-16s, because all the units around here have them. Fargo, Sioux Falls, Des Moines, Madison, Duluth - all F-16s. At the moment, the closest non-viper fighters are probably Eagles out of Great Falls. Unless you count A-10s out of Whiteman (not the most impressive flyover, though it's a different story if they are weapons free).

Other close-by cool options would be Bones out of Ellsworth, B2s or A-10s from Whiteman or tankers from all over around here (Sioux City, Lincoln, Milwaukee to name a few).

Best flyover would be an F-35 I think. Loud as all living hell.

At the ISU-Mizzou game two years ago they had a B-1 flyover, that was pretty neat, but there's a LOT of National Guard in Missouri. Think they had Blackhawks at KU a couple of years ago, as well.

My all-time favorite was last December 11, the Shuttle Carrier 747 made a detour from it's route from Fort Worth to Shreveport to circle around Houston with Endeavour on its back.

There aren't any B-1s in Missouri, though. MOANG had F-15s at STL, but they got BRACed and moved to Great Falls. Whiteman has Active Duty B-2s and Reserve A-10s. There's also a C-130 wing up in St. Joseph.

There used to be some bones based in Wichita at McConnell, but they are gone now. These days they fly out of Dyess in Texas or Ellsworth in South Dakota.

When they aren't falling out of the sky, B-1s are a pretty sweet flyover noise-wise, though. 4 F-101s per jet will do that. A 2ship of bones has the same number and type of engines as an 8 ship of F-16s (well old F-16s anyway).

It was a B-1. Dunno where the hell it came from, but it was pretty loud.

F-35 may be fun, but are the CTOL versions even really out yet? Aren't they still in flight test?

I know the STOVL is getting ready for flight tests but isn't quite there yet

Carrier version still has a ways to go

The F-22 is a pretty sweet demonstration to see

I challenge any flyover noise or otherwise of 4 supersonic F-14's in formation.

No mention of possibly playing Navy...maybe an aircraft carrier pays a visit to Ames?

And actually for Air Force I'd say we have a good shot at getting an F-22 here

After all, the F-15's are falling out of the sky, and the F-16's are too busy doing all the work the F-22 should be doing but isn't because it's too expensive to lose so they only use them at air shows instead of sending them to either war zone :jimlad:

They are in either OT&E or DT&E at the moment. I'm sure there's enough for a flyover somewhere :D

They are the loudest fighter the Air Force (and I think any of the services for that matter) has ever put in the air. In fact, it's going to be hard to find places to base them due largely to that particular issue.

Well you're only likely to see that happen at an Iranian sporting event, and even that's a huge question mark these days. The only noise F-14s are making is the sound of them getting chopped up.

I'd say the chances are fairly slim. Only operational units are in Virginia, Florida, Nevada and Alaska. Not exactly convenient for a flyover. Would be pretty sweet if we could do it though.

The F-22 has a whole bunch of issues fighting the current war(s). Needless to say, it wasn't built for any of the roles demanded of airframes in the current war(s) and that's why Gates chopped it (and, IMO, rightfully so).

My experience of this was in 1997.

From what I read the Iranian ones haven't flown since the late eighties.

They are keeping the newest ones in "retired reserve" where they could be recomissioned if necessary, a la SR-71 has been multiple times.

It is unofficially known as the only plane in the world that wins air superiority just by turning on its radar.

Can you tell that fly but made an impression on me?

I was being sarcastic and taking a pot shot at the Air Force

Not completely off topic...

I never listen to these call in shows, but had the radio on in my garage last night while building some bookshelves. I thought it was particularly brutal, the same three guys called in to talk to Pollard and Rhoads. One wanted his son to go to ISU to play mens soccer. When Pollard told him there wasn't a chance in hell that ISU would be adding mens soccer in the foreseeable future he called in 20 minutes later to ask Rhoads if he would recruit his soccer playing son to be a kicker on the football team. The other two wanted to let both Pollard and Rhoads know they were the two (and ONLY two) that met the team back in Ames after the road trip this weekend. The whole show just made me uncomfortable, I can only imagine how Walters and the AD/coaches feel during one of those things...

Limit to one call per show.

The B1's out of South Dakota used my in-law's farmhouse in Nebraska as a bombing run target. Their farm was located in a valley, but the house sat high on a hill. The planes would fly low down the valley, and pop up over the house during the bombing run. Several times, my mother-in-law looked out the kitchen window while doing dishes, and was looking head-on at the pilot as he was making his run.

On another encounter, I was on my grandpa's tractor helping him spray soybeans, and an F4 snuck up behind us and used us as a bombing target. Scared the crap out of us since we couldn't hear it over the tractor engine until it was on top of us, and you felt the hot blast from the jet engines as it passed just overhead.

Gotta love those F-18's....

Of course, standing all of like 30' to the side of an F-18E SuperHornet doing a catapult launch with full afterburners is pretty sweet too

Rather than doing a call in show they should do a live online Q&A - that would be fun and would be moving in the direction of technology.
