Well, they fired Morgan and we haven't had a winning season since.

Morgan was heading downhill fast, and we got rid of him before it caused more problems, which I'm fully confident it would have. He had zero control over his team. ISU had, as you said, 2 NBA guards on there team and only were able to grab 6 Big 12 wins and no post season honers. Once Homan left, who was a Eustachy recruit, this team went downhill at a fast rate and there was not a single leader on the floor. They were academically horrible, and it cost us 2 scholarships during McDermott's first 2 years, I believe.

I'm not trying to stick up for McDermott here at all, but to say we would have been better off to keep Morgan is just flat out foolish.

AS soon as Colvin went in, I knew to avoid this place, for the same exact posters with the same exact agenda they have had for the last 2 seasons were going to jump on this opportunity to once again fault the coach.

Quite sad, really.

I know he was aware of the quote, I don't think he is an idiot.

I'm pretty sure most of the players on the team 3 years ago, if asked, would have also wanted Mike Taylor to be allowed to play.

Fact of the matter is that was 3 years ago, young into McD Big 12 coaching career. Now in year 4 desperate measures call upon desperate times.

GMas asked each and every player if Colvin would be welcomed back. Also he felt it unfair to CB and DG and others to have put so much in to be forced to play so short-handed. GMac honestly felt we would be in a situation to only be able to play 4 players. He said Colvin will remain the last guy on the bench until his stint is up but the team needed him. One of those leadership conundrums you get into once in a while where there actually ISN'T a right answer.

Seriously? ISU basketball was a national laughingstock after the pictures and firing of LE.

Did Morgan have some talent to use? Yes, but he was also the guy that helped recruit Stinson and Blalock, so if you think the program was in "much better shape", who do you think should get some credit for that?

Eustachys mess did not cost us scholarships. Morgan cost us scholarships. Its pretty simple.

KG -- I have more respect for you than anybody on this Board! However, this should not have been a team decision.

Why not? they were there and know exactly what Colvin did to get himself in that position. They were the ones he disrespected. They have seen what he has done since to redeem himself. They are the ones that are here to win games and compete. If they feel it makes them better and he deserves to come back then I am fine with it. Had that not been the scenario I wouldn't feel that way.

I guess we will never really know will we?

I'm aware he had winning records, but in his last year he had a team that HIGHLY underachieved and disappointed. In his final year, Morgan lead that team to a horrible 6-10 Big 12 record one year after getting to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

If 6-10 in one year is horrible, pls insert adjective for GMac's three years here>>>___________

And Morgan's last team was sorely lacking in big men once Homan graduated, so while it did underachieve, anyone that really thought it was going to be a great team was fooling themselves. Hilarious how if Morgan needed an opportunity to rebuild, he is described as "horrible", "disappointed", and "HiGHLY underachieved"; but there is an army of posters that make continual excuses for GMac year after year.

This needs to stop, now. It's completely ****** to draw comparisons between the two. Chizik did not treat his players well at all...especially those he did not recruit. Slow your roll on this one...it's baseless.

Do we know for sure how he treats his players? They seem to like bailing out and we have one confirmed although it seems entirely shady that says that he had absolutely no relationship with the coach at all. That would be Wes Johnson. With his comments and the number of defections I think it is fair to ask the question of what is going on inside the program.

Very interesting quotes in the Register from Mac.

At the time of Colvin's suspension -

“I got in this profession because I love to coach basketball, and I love to help young people grow. If winning ever gets in the way of that, then I have to get out of it.

“(Colvin) needs to grow up. If it costs me a couple wins along the way, then so be it. He’s going to be better, and I’m going to sleep better because of that.â€

After the game last night -

“I hated to do it, but given the choice I had, it was the only choice.â€

Really??? The only choice??? I call BS. He could have stuck a student manager in there if it got to that point! Mac is gradually losing respect in his coaching abilities, but in one fell swoop, he's lost a lot more when it comes to standing by his convictions and his integrity.

“When Craig Brackins looks at you and says, ‘Mac, you don’t have a choice,’ I had to play him,†McDermott said.

Who the hell is running this team?? The inmates or the warden?

Up until now, it seemed like Mac was a great guy. Now, I don't know who the real Mac is.

This is the dumbest thread I've read in a quite a while. So we shouldn't play a guy with attitude problems, even though we were down to 7 guys to rotate. I don't follow Cyclone athletics for it's high morality, I follow b/c I grew up an ISU fan, graduated from there and like watching the teams win.

Again I am not sticking up for McDermott here. I am just saying that Morgan was not a better person for the job.

My only problem is McD said that if the suspension cost him games along the way, it was worth it. He saw not playing Colvin last night as detrimental to our chances of winning the game, obviously, so he lifted the suspension.

I was saying this yesterday, and I was being called names because of it. This was a bad move, no matter how you slice it. Some poster even said if the players voted for it, then it was ok......wow.

You are wrong. ISU's APR issues pre-dated Morgan.

And the loss of 2 scholarships for GMac's first year is just another lame excuse. He could barely fill the scholly's he had with D1 talent, so I am supposed to believe that getting to bring in two more marginal kids would have made a difference?

The hate for Morgan on the board is ridiculous. The guy was fired, what else do you want to accomplish by trashing him? Oh yeah, that is supposed to make GMac look better. Pathetic.

It wasn't a vote. It was a unanimous opinion.

We actually had 8 players available without Colvin. One didn't see the floor at all.

Here's how things went down...Just going to say this once and leave it alone as it is very obvious we all have our own opinion.

Colvin made a mistake towards the team.

Mac talked to the team and they all said, punish him, but don't kick him off.

Mac suspends Colvin and talks to the press - we all know what he said...Mac needed to know if Colvin was serious about wanting to be part of the team.

Situation changes

Mac talks to the team and they all say, we need him.

Should we question the whole team's integrity? Should the team not be involved in a mistake made against them?

Iowa State below NCAA standard, loses scholarships - Men's College Basketball - ESPN

This article was written in May of 2007, after McDermott's first year. Article says ISU was penalized 2 scholarships for the past season (McDermott's first year) because ISU's APR was too low over the 3 previous season, which coincidentally was the entire Morgan era.

The problem's may have predated Morgan, that I do not know, but obviously they did not improve what so ever under Morgan. They have improved under McDermott.

Once again, let me emphasize, I AM NOT TRYING TO MAKE EXCUSES FOR MCDERMOTT!!! I am of the opinion that I would much rather have McDermott here than Morgan. Although I'm about to the point where I'm not sure if I will support McDermott much more.

How did he tear it apart? We had 2 NBA guards on the team before they fired Morgan. Blame Pollard and Geoffrey for tearing down the program, not Morgan.

Good point, except you backed up the argument you were trying to dispute :biglaugh:

1) WM wasn't able to take us to postseason play with those 2 NBA guards

2) Those 2 NBA guards were LE recruits, so it seems that the cupboard was obviously more full for Morgan than McDermott by your own admission...

Of course you'll find some way to twist this as another reason that McDermott should be fired because you're one of them that takes anything negative that happens and makes it McDermott's fault, but if we beat Kansas on Saturday you and all of the other "sky is falling" people will stop posting until the next negative thing happens...I bet some of you are a blast at parties

It's pretty simple what happened here...

Mac was put into a position that he couldn't predict at the time of giving the suspension (i.e. Boozer out, Lucca quiting). He could field a team and still compete but the risk is high(er) that something may happen in the course of a game and he would not be able to substitute confidently. Or, he could lift CC's suspension and have a more "appropriate" or solid sub if needed. He can't just lift the suspension via his own accord so he turns to the team and asks them what they think. By them all agreeing to reversing the decision he created an alibi to support his decision.

The funniest thing about this whole situation is how hard Jon Miller jumped on the bandwaggon of hating on this deciscion. He loves to rag on the Cyclones when they are down, and rub it in our face.

Deace's reaction is hilarious as well, would he feel this way if this happened at at Michigan?
