Not surprised you question this...

Getting Nurse would be one of the few positives I've heard regarding MBB in awhile. He's been a lot of places in this world and coached kids with a lot of different backgrounds. And it is a good thing he's from Iowa. I'll choose the Iowa guy over out-of-state guy with same credentials 10 times out of 10.

First of all, you just don't find two people with the same credentials.

Secondly, where someone is from should be totally irrelevant. We should want the best coach possible.

As I said previously, my preference would be someone that is bringing more of an outside perspective to the gig than this guy probably can...someone with a pedigree of CBB playing and coaching at a power conference school that has had success at both. It seems as though Nurse has had some good experiences if what I read here is accurate but, make no mistake, his origins in basketball from both a playing and a coaching standpoint are nearly identical to GMs.

I guess it comes down to the fact that I think we need someone to challenge the status quo of ISU MBB as opposed to reinforcing it. Maybe Nurse can challenge it...I sure hope so.

This will not be possible with the uncertainty of Gmac's future. Even if an asst. coach from a comparable school/conference were interested and liked Gmac, the lame-duck status here would cool that interest in a hurry.
The assistant who ultimately joins the staff will do so because of a large step-up from his current salary and working conditions, even if it lasts just one year.
That certainly applies to Nurse.

I think this is correct. We are not in a position to pick and choose whoever we want.

If he wants to coach in collge, this is his chance to get started. He has developed players for the NBA a plus. He also is suppose to be a shooting expert, something this team needs. Good X and Os coach and has coached up tempo teams, something this team needs work on. Add the player relations part and it seems like a good fit, the right fit.

Nice analysis, but do we really want two UNI coaches on the bench?

I know nothing of Nurse's coaching pedigree but this type of hire concerns me.

He is a state of Iowa guy and a UNI guy just like McDermott.

It would seem to me that we need to bring in some fresh outside perspectives...not someone with a similar background.

Just my opinion.

Your opinion is based off nothing basically. Look at his pedigree, then form an opinion. Of course, this may be somewhat inconvenient for you because his pedigree may suggest he would be a good hire and you would hate for Mac to do something right.

Did Nurse say anything in the Matt and Miller interview? I missed it.

He didn't admit anything, but he didn't deny anything. He basically said he's going to review his options at the end of the season, which could be very soon. I think it's going to happen.

Did I hear correctly during the interview that Nurse and Gmac played together for 3 years at UNI? If I have that correct, Nurse said Gmac's nickname was "blackhole" because whenever they threw the ball into him, they knew it wasn't coming back out!

You are saying the blackhole continues in Ames?

Could someone please tell me why Nick Nurse will be able to come in and take over. GMAC is still the head coach, still his style of play. He will coach one position and take his orders from GMAC. He can not recruit. You got to be able to see the players and if you do not know the coaches of the players it won't happen. I just do not see where this helps ISU. What players has GMAC recruited to be in the top of the BIG 12.

From the interview it sounded to me like this very well could happen. I've never heard a coach that is still in season ever leave the door open this much. Typically you get the whole I'm only focused on my current team and don't consider offers rhetoric. Nurse admitted that he has had conversations and will be considering it once his season is over.

Personally, I like it. While we're not going to change our offense over to what he runs, he should help with organizing our fast break and hopefully help with the ridiculous number of layups that this team misses. Also, his experience with the NBA / NBDL and his connections with the local AAU teams might just help out the recruiting.

Who said he was going to take over? Nurse can help Mac adjust his style of play to a more uptempo pro type of play. How do you know he cannot recruit, he has the abality to connect with players, has pro experence, and has developed players for the pro game something that would help him get some kids. He has been around the game for a bit he probly has some ties. He also puts on shooting camps in the summer, so he knows a few coaches from that. ISU needs to win now, recruiting for the future doesnt help winning now. Having a good bench coach, with head coaching experence as your right hand man does. Having him as an asst may free up the others to spend more time recruiting. Recruiting players really hasnt been the problem, developing them and keeping them has been the problem, maybe this will help with that also.
