Your point is pretty solid, but I think this thread kind of screamed for it with the poor listening of the OP to Fred's press conference.

Now, discussing the various pros/cons to running a set-play offense as opposed to less plays, that could be an interesting thread.

Until we derail it, which we inevitably will.

You're right ...I picked the thread to bring this up.

The fact that there too many idiots looking to ruin every thread with the best
smartass answer still stands.

The people doing this are ruinining a great site.
Hope they are proud of themselves.
I'll get off the soapbox and go back to lurking...since heaven forbid I actually add something of knowledge.

Was anyone conern that Hoiberg told his players the other night---no plays just run and gun. i could coach that way too.
LE used to not even install his offense until Christmas vacation. His philosophy was, the players played nothing but offense all off-season. He wanted them to get back into the swing of playing defense first. Maybe FH is employing a similar philosophy.

I was sitting in cyclone alley in the 3rd row, I saw/heard Jake Anderson calling out some numbers and holding up his hand singling out the numbers. So I think they did run some plays.

Acually, he was taking JimmyJohns orders for the post game meal.

"That'll be a 3 on wheat w/the works, a 5 on white ..."

IMO the original post dripped of smartassness with the last part of it claiming he can coach as well as our head MBB coach if that's all there is to it. The rest has just been gravy...

I think you meant to say "...the original post dripped of smatassness..."

CFH said in his post game presser that running plays was situation dependent. If he felt that it's appropriate, he'll stay out of the way, let his players set up and run the offense w/o any set plays. Likewise, if the situation's appropriate, he'll be calling set plays in order to maximize any advantages at the time of the call. Sometimes the best way to coach is to let your players play and stay out of the way, then use the time outs to make adjustments as necessary. Very much the way JO coached back in the day. Almost all the really good coaches have that flexibility in coaching style as basketball is such a fluid game anyway. Very few coaches who are rigid in their style succeed; coach Mac being one of the exceptions.

Had LE once tell me nearly the same thing. Players grew up their whole lives knowing how to play offense, but no one ever taught them defense and rebounding. LE really only had out-of-bounds plays, and a few basic sets. From that point on the players were on their own... And, it worked. At least it worked really well when Tinsley was around.

two things,
first, the time Mac spent at ISU hardly screams "success".

Secondly, from what I can glean, most of the success he
HAS had, here, there, or anywhere, was due to the assistant coaches
he's had around him.

This is no kidding, I was specifically told by a nephew that went to
uni at the time we hired mac "we had hired the wrong uni coach and
time would prove it" I disagreed, cause after the "previous" previous
coach all I could think of was, "gimmee some structured BB."

Well, let's just say it cost me a BIG bottle of crown royal on that bet, HA.

imho, if FH wants to let'em play like J.O. I'm all good with it.

How do you know that we don't have plays? Are you on BBALL team or what? I am sure they have plays but you just don't know anything about them.

Run and gun is one of the "PLAYS" that they run.

Hmmm....we went high-low often, if it wasn't there they kicked it back out, our passing was exquisite for the first game of the year.

All things we haven't done for crap under McD for 5 years.

No complaining here!!

As long as he gets out there and yells at the guys. McD might as well have been sleeping during those games

Funny you brought that up, I was mentioning to a buddy during the game how nice it was to not see a coach flying around on the sidelines screaming instructions, the players probably enjoyed it too.

Again, I loved the passing!! It puzzled me in McD 5 years we always had issues getting the ball down low.

By not running plays, the coaches got to see the natural tendencies of the guys together on the floor in a game situation. In trying to run an up-tempo offense you have to be able to coach your guys on how to play when there's not a play called just as much as when there is one.

Put them out there, let them play, and see what they do on their own. Then you see their team strengths and can game plan around that. You'll also get to see what weaknesses they have as a group and can coach them up. Let the guys' natural tendencies guide the game plan and play calling rather than trying to ram the guys into a system that isn't right for them. You just have to figure out what those tendencies are.

It's an exhibition game - it's meant for building confidence and chemistry and as a way for the coaches to gather information on how their team will perform in a game situation.
