Even though it's been VERY civil so far, just a reminder to keep political talk to a minimum. Thanks!

I'm glad he shared his knowledge on the origin of ISU.

Until 1959 it was known as the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. - Wiki

I guess metal working and Plato about sum it up.

Supposedly a political science major wrote and submitted it. There's a couple quotes in it I really like.

"... I turned the corner by the library and noticed three Caterpillar and Case IH tractors down the road, parked neatly in the grass in front of Davidson Hall."

Ok..I know it's the farm kid coming out in me but theres a Challenger (not caterpillar) tractor, a Deere tractor, and a Case IH combine parked in front of Davidson Hall. If you can't even name the equipment correctly, that's strikes 1-2-3 right there with me and you have lost all credibility.

"Nothing says "let us come together and honor the humble beginnings of Iowa State University" like letting giant, multinational corporations invade our campus and set up forward operating bases of arrogant advertising and patronization."

This is where the guy really starts becoming an idiot. Those pieces of machinery are donated for Veishea week from local implement dealers and parked there by the Ag. Systems Technology Club. So I'm pretty stumped to which multinational corporations he is speaking of. If he would've taken the time to venture over to the equipment he would've noticed a sign in the cab stating what implement dealer in was being borrowed from. This has been a tradition that has been going on since at least 1957 to my knowledge.

"You know, the one week of the year in which Iowa State whores out its pristine — chain-link fence filled — campus to agriculture implementers so that they can have a new, temporary showroom all over the landscape."

Temporary Showroom? Are you kidding? There are SOOOO many students here who are looking into purchase a new 300,000 combine right now. Give me a break.

I hate stupid people.
The person who wrote the letter obviously doesn't realize these implement manufacturers employ many thousands of Americans. Farm implement manufacturing is one of the few manufacturing industries that's still based primarily within the US. Ames in particular has a hydraulic transmission plant located on E. 13th Street that makes transmissions for a number of these corporations, so I don't mind them marketing their products on campus, as long as these products are still made in the USA.

Its alright. Guys like the that will probably move back to Chicago once they're done with school and never look back. He's probably also a Yankees and Cowboys fan (not that there is anything wrong with that) or is a hipster.

Actually I know/have met some of the kids family (not him personally) and they are good people and heavly involved in the Ag industry. They have taken to disowning him.

Here's a pretty neat picture of the display for those who maybe haven't seen it.

Pretty well written article that should appear in tomorrow's daily in response to the original one. Enjoy!

Letter: Putting the A in VEISHEA - Iowa State Daily: Opinion

In a typical Iowa fashion, someone reasonable and knowledgeable responds to printed words by someone less reasonable and less knowledgeable without tearing them a new one or even denigrating them for amusement purposes. They simply state the the facts, explain the tradition, and validate the exhibit.

The article that spawned this response was neither clever nor knowledgeable. It appears to be someone with political aspirations which trumps the persons destination for sensibility and worse yet - common sense.

I hope this discussion doesn't take a political slant (too late) because an ill-informed opinion is an ill-informed opinion (read: an idiot is an idiot).

Vehement political types are much more like each other than any of us. Reasonable people are still the majority - we just don't scream as loud.

The original article stunk of liberal bias; it was obvious from the 1st paragraph on when he said "there were three tractors sitting on a beautiful patch of grass". He probably refers to mowing the lawn as a unjustified violation of the civil rights of innocent vegitative matter and would get Obama to allocate billions borrowed against your kids future to fund a study and to organize a grass roots measure to pass legislation making it a felony to commit genocide against ... grass.

The fences are out of control. I don't know whose bright idea those were, but the fences need to go. They make the place look more like a prison than a campus.

They're not chain link fences, they're just posts with chains connecting them. And if students would just use the sidewalks, there would be no need for them. I don't have a problem with students being on the grass...studying, playing frisbee, whatever, but some would just as soon cut across the grass than not and that creates little cattle trails everywhere. I see students every day get off the bus by the Hub and what do they do? Walk straight over the grass toward the library. If it's muddy, they'll use the sidewalks, but otherwise not. All the grass there is dead from being trampled.

I would rather have fences than trampled paths all over the place. How freaking hard is it to stay on the sidewalk?
