Time to stop playing at Drake

Do you shoot better on your own rims you play on every game or on rims you play on once maybe twice in your life?

Well, if shooting on different rims is the reason why we shot 37% from the field Tuesday night and missed ten free throws than we should never, ever, ever play a non-conference road game or neutral court game again.

You always play better at home, hence the beginning of Hilton Magic.

Not to mention that I'm pretty sure that the state legislature would likely have quite a bit to say about that idea. I beleive that Iowa is one of the few, maybe even only, state in the country where all the Division I basketball teams play each other. Unless things have changed culturally since I last lived there, I don't think Iowans have ever liked "big-timers". It would be a bruising PR battle for ISU or Iowa to try and pull that.

Since when did the state legislature become involved in ISU's scheduling? It's not like the state would lose a bunch of money because the teams stopped playing if it did come to that. This isn't the end of Tammy vs. Texa$ football.

Despite our lackluster performance last night, there is still no reason that team should have lost to Drake last night. Our players were recruited to Iowa State because their talent was Big 12 level, not Missouri Valley. When you play in Hilton Coliseum in front of 12k to 14k fans, and the other arenas in the Big 12, it can be very difficult to transition down to play a game in a glorified high school gymnasium full of 4k to 5k fans. This letdown, along with Drake's extra motivation to beat the BCS conference team, plays extremely far into Drake's (and any other mid-major)'s favor. Mizzou does not play Missouri State; Kansas and Kansas State do not play Wichita State.... it's time for Iowa State to only play this game at home, at Wells Fargo, or else not at all. If this team hits its stride in Big 12 play, and develops a tournament resume, last night's game at Drake will be a thorn in our side, and possibly even a burst our bubble. It is time to quit catering to a private school who's success directly hampers our ability to compete and reach the next level. We might as well play a schedule North Carolina or Duke if we're going to lose at Drake, instead.

I have not read the entire thread, but the this above sounds just like the attitude of the hawk fans we despise. Oh, and Kansas and KSU do and have played Wichita State. Missouri just played Missouri State last week. Goodness.

Do you really think it's best for ISU to play nothing but home games and the occasional tournament in South Padre Island or Florida until January, when our first road game is against Kansas in Phog Allen? To me as a fan, playing a road game, even one against a puny, pathetic mid-major team like Drake (because as we all know BCS basketball teams are always automatically better than non-BCS teams), is a good test for a team, even if we are starved for wins these days.

That concept annoys me, too. Even if we stick with a mostly-cake non-conference slate (I think it should have a little more bulk), having to play an in-state road game once per year vs. UNI/Drake should be no burden. The team is forced to play somewhere other than Hilton, but it's still close enough to Ames that fan support will be there.

I would not advocate dropping the home-and-home with any of the in-state schools. I see no reason to do it. The rotation has been in place long enough that it would seem like excuse-making.

ISU does, however, need to defeat Drake & UNI more than twice in succession.

I think Iowa State has done better vs. Iowa over the last five years, if I recall. Nobody's talking about dropping that one.

The biggest problem with the non-league schedule — if there's an opponent we consider "inferior" or "equal" (which is typically everyone these days), there is no chance to balance a loss until conference season — when the grind immediately becomes night-and-day. And ISU has to go into that stretch without being tested at nearly the same level.

We can drop Drake & UNI on the road, if that's what people want. But I don't want to see those games replaced with home-and-home vs. any school that isn't a consistent competitor in Big Ten/Big East/ACC/Pac-12/SEC.

My problem with the Drake/UNI situation is how much it affects us negatively when we lose in comparison to an extremely minimal game if we win. Compare it to playing UNI in football. How many times have they been close vs. ISU and Iowa? A late TD for a 1 point victory and two blocked field goals from the Hawks. Should they be this close? Of course not. I like playing Drake/UNI but I think a home and home should be left for the big boys.

Most schools these days are trying to join conferences that are more competitive... If Iowa State can't schedule Drake or UNI what's the next step? Division II ??? Give me a break! Just win next time geeez!

Some of yall internet tough guys need to go out and look how other teams schedule before you act like it would be so ridiculous to expect Drake to play in ames for all games (or at least a 2 for 1)

No, we get that. What most people are saying is, this is what makes Iowa unique. Personally, I get sick and tired of comparing everything we do with scheduling, recruiting, etc to what other BCS team do. We should do what we think is best, and stick to what little tradition we have.

Truth be told, I think you should quit playing all MVC teams being you can't beat any of them consistently:twitcy:

Maybe you should play UNI at Wells Fargo too!

Quit making excuses when you keep getting beat by mid majors...

FYI, UNI is the big boy now in men's basketball.

The reality of it is that we shouldn't play Drake we should play Duke or Michigan State or Kentucky in that spot. One its good for exposure and two a loss actually makes our RPI go up. If the RPI is the reality of the situation on some level then yeah, don't play Drake win or lose. Aside from local interest the game does us no good. The Michigan loss helps us more than a Drake win. Take the program national.
