With most of the offensive staff being replaced it looks like CPR is revamping the offense. I'm thinking he is going to get an OC that runs a system that he wants. CPR has always talked about wanting to run the football and stretching the field so I'm thinking he's looking for an OC whose system is power running with vertical passing.

So if we are seeing a trend that is going to point us toward needing to fill multiple roles is there any scenario that we land both Strohmeier and Christensen? One as OC, the other as assistant HC? That an through Austin Flynn in as the RB coach?? Just a thought since the rumor is 3 to fill.....

I can't help but think this procee is nearly done. The speed and swift terminations seem to indicate a plan.

I hope so. We need someone in place so we don't lose any of our verbals, such as Mister.

Doubt if both Strohmeier and Christensen happens. More likely one or the other.

I believe CPR has stated several times that likes the spread offense, so I don't see him going away from that. But hopefully he'll do away with this awful read option game.

He was hedging a bit on that on the radio the other day. Said you can go the baylor route and focus on a high octane recieving corps and qb or the ksu route and shove it down peoples throats. Said you have to have your identity though and then go as after those kids that fit it and they had struggled to find it. Sounded to me like he was open to something new and change. I bet he makes a bolder hire than people expect.

Interesting read on Strohmeier. He likes it at Iowa Western and says he doesn't necessarily want to move on to bigger and better things. From Sept. 2013.

Strohmeier the hottest coach in junior-college football

sure until his salary goes from $150,000 a year to 4-5 times that. If offered the iowa st. Gig he wouldn't even hesitate IMO. $$$ talks. He's young with kids and he could set his family up for life with 5 years at iowa st. Not a difficult decision.

Christensen as OC
Strohmeier as QB ooach
Flynn as RB coach
Coach K stays at O-Line (hope he stays with ISU for a while, has a good history of developing OL)
Sturdy stays at WR.

That coaching combination has the ability to set up ISU for the future if the OC gets hired away once or twice. Allows the program to have a OC in waiting 3 or 4 times.

Out of curiosity, how much of Iowa Western's success has been because of great coaching and how much has been because they have more talent. Not suggesting Strohmeier isn't a good coach, but I'm just curious if they win because they have way more talent then anybody else.

Would he be going to Iowa State to be the head coach bc he isn't making 600-750k as an assistant. Even at that salary a family isn't getting set-up for life.

The zone read or other option plays for the running game adds a valuable dynamic and makes it far more difficult for defenses. Rohach is not very good with option running plays so far less were called when he played. Sam was good at it and productive with it when healthy. The volume of option plays next season will depend primarily on who the QB is but it certainly should not be removed from the playbook especially given Rohach's long TD run out of it against WVU.

I agree that it will be a total shock if CPR hires an OC with primarily a pro-style background instead of a spread offense background. I look for the new OC to have a Pistol background since the Pistol facilitates a power (or North/South) running game with option plays and a spread passing attack.

I'd guess we are paying $350k-$400k because didn't Mess make $330k?

I don't see Strohmeier coming here unless he is the OC.

I'm all for the zone read if it's being used sensibly or if you have a big QB that can dish out and take some punishment. Dialing it up 25+ times like they did in the season opener was a major contributing factor in Sam getting banged up. You can get away with that stuff with a big, physical QB but guys like Sam are simply not built to take that kind of beating.

Not sure about this... and it might be a valid question.

Even if this is the case that IWCC players are way more talented, how did they manage to get some of the most talented JUCO players in the country 5 years after starting the program? Maybe the guy is a heck of a recruiter?

He's obviously doing something right, I just wonder if it's one or the other or both. If he's a heck of a coach and offensive mind then maybe he's a legit choice for OC. If he's a heck of a recruiter but not a great coach I'd like to see him on the staff but not as OC, but maybe as running backs coach.

Tom Osborne had a hand in helping set up the football program.

IWCC’s sudden ascent surprises Osborne - Omaha.com

No doubt he had connections so the school could get the best JC talent.

I'd still be interested in their coach as OC.

My prediction:
Klenakis OC OL
Strohmeier Asst. HC QB or RB coach
Derrick Day recruiting coordinator
Sturdy recievers & t.ends
Sage or Flynn RB or QB Coach.

If we are going to double up a coach on positions, we better not be hiring our OC from inside. Doubling up positions should give us more money for a good OC.
