With how many highly ranked kids that end up transferring Im alright with not pulling in that many. Its tough to know if they are ready to play at the Division 1 level out of hs, and often times they arent physically ready, were juco's and transfers are more likely to be hits physically and mentally because of the age and experience parts. Dont get me wrong I wasnt a happy camper when Vaughn went another direction but I think for the one year he's likely to play in college I'd rather have the guy who we got from UNLV play for us for that one year. Freshman studs usually take time to figure things out where we got a grown man that will be ready from the tip.

That was my thoughts on the Vaughn situation as well. There are only a few freshmen each year that will give you more than what we got from Kane and Clyburn. You can even throw Royce into that because many people thought he was going to be a one and done transfer too.

Vaughn may have been great for us but out chances are better with BDJ.

Rather take a one and done 5th year senior like DeAndre Kane or BDJ with a lot of experience and are grown men over one and done high schooler

Already proved we can showcase the talents of a one and done 5th year guy or any transfer. It'd be nice to land a one and done kid like Diallo so we can prove we can showcase a 5* kid out of HS and have him be a lottery pick. It'll happen sooner than later and will just give us more options in the long run

High school recruits take 2 of 3 things:

1. A lot of time (years)

2. A lot of clout. (decades)

3. Very close prior relationship, either proximity or prior relationship.

ISU doesn't have the clout, FH has only been here for 5 years. He only has 3 NCAA tournies to even point to. We are competing against national titles. These are the most prized recruits in the country and there is a lot of time for them to hear from 10 teams with final fours in the past 15 years how their school is better.

Transfers we have clout. FH invented the transfer/free agency game. There's a short period to recruit. We can full court press these guys and, right or wrong, they are less valued compared to top 50 recruits.

I don't need to mention that Iowa hasn't produced much talent since FH has had any success at ISU.

Highly ranked high schoolers are harder to convince, take longer to woo, and aren't necessarily worth as much as the other guys we have gotten.

Not to mention, getting 2nd place for the top SG in the country with only what we have done the past 5 years is extremely, extremely impressive. I will absolutely not listen to any juvenile Ricky Bobby "If you're not first you're last" bulls*it. It shows skill and ability by Matt A and FH. There's literally nothing else they could have done. They were victims of circumstance, not inability.

Being in Iowa is certainly a disadvantage, no doubt. Most of the time when a school like Arkansas or LSU gets a top 25 guy they're in-state.

I don't think anyone is attacking the staff; they're bringing in great players. Just seems like what they're selling is more convincing to transfers than HS kids. Maybe HS kids are more star struck with the big name school, whereas guys who've been around the block have been there and have learned to look past that? Dunno.

Having guys picked in the lottery would certainly be a huge help. I think showing we can get fringe-NBA guys their NBA shot has been very helpful with that crowd.

Ok, I'll stop now.

Ejim getting drafted in lottery would show we can take an under-recruited freshmen and have him mature to the point of getting drafted

Kane getting drafted in lottery would show we can take that 5th year guy and get him drafted...

this draft could be huge for our program.

They aren't going to sniff the lottery.

Lottery? They we will be lucky if they are both taken in the second round. Neither are going in the first, and no way they are lottery picks.

Mel, with his excellent shooting display at the combine, might

have gotten into the end of the second round discussion.

Pretty good from a guy who couldn't catch the ball four years ago.

"2015 Playground Elite guard Henry Ellenson seems to be favoring six schools: Iowa State, UNC, Duke, Michigan State, Marquette, and Wisconsin. He plans on taking his visits in August and signing in November."

Not sure how they gleaned who he's favoring - kid is a heckuva poker player when it comes to recruiting interests. Rarely, if ever shows enthusiasm for one school or another (that I've seen written). I think most assume the bluebloods and Wisky are in good shape because thy are who they are.

Nevertheless, glad to be part of the favored 6 - however it was determined.

I meant to say draft instead of lottery... that's what I get for posting late at night haha

I'd be shocked if a HS kid made a decision to attend ISU for four years of his career based on the fact Ejim gets drafted 59th overall.

Fred has missed out on the top recruits in the last couple of years because he has been going after the elite guys. After the ranking get past 15-20 they are kind of a crap shoot. Look at how morris was barely in the top 100 yet after all was said and done he should have been a top 30 guy. In other words Fred is going after the elite guys and then is sorting through the rest to see where he can find the players that work for his system as well as evaulating them himself and not listening to espn or rivals
