I'm excited about Niang's trimmer weight. I think his excess held him back a bit last year...plus his ankle/foot was not built to survive the impact of him landing on it. That cost us the national championship :) Can't wait for BBALL to start back up!

From that NBCSports article:

25-pound weight loss helps Georges Niang expand his game: Earlier this summer it was reported that Iowa State rising junior forward Georges Niang, whose season ended due to a broken foot suffered in the Cyclones’ NCAA tournament win over North Carolina Central, dropped some 25 pounds since the end of the season. The result: a more versatile player who’s better equipped to play on the perimeter on both ends of the floor. And being at a camp that features more perimeter players than prototypical big men has helped Niang as he works to become an even better player in 2014-15.
“I feel that [now I can] guard smaller guys and keep them in front of me,” Niang said. “I noticed I couldn’t do that last year when I was heavier, so [the weight loss] helps. Also, getting up and down the court is a lot easier. I rarely feel tired now, so I feel like where my stamina is I can keep going and pushing guys to another level.”

So is this the new story this year? Appears to be...
Georges Broke foot in NCAA last year
Lost 25 lbs
Can jump now
Still played with Nerlens Noel
Etc...

An old man rec league player that can jump and play defense now?? That's a scary situation for the Big 12.

Looks like we have to add another person to the recipient end of Morris' alley oops. Only 85 days until college bball starts according to Rothstein!

I have him on ignore but people quote him. I'm supposed to listen to some of our own posters pretend he's not a troll then I see a quoted post where he's talking crap to ISU's star player's mom??? Dude needs to crawl out of here.
What are you talking about? Now I am "talking crap to an ISU star players mom?" Where do you guys get this stuff? You should write for Fox News. I seriously think you guys just make up random things to get bent out of shape about.

Georges Achilles heel has been his stamina. If he can play a whole game with only a few 1-2 minute spells, look out.

He's talking politics in a non-Cave thread. I'm highly offended and I expect banishment.

I would bet that the majority of national champions won their conference tournament. So while the championship itself doesn't do much except for teams on the bubble (or maybe other teams it improves seeding) it is an indicator of tournament success.
For the record, three of the last six national champions did NOT win their conference tourney the year they won the national title. So you're indicator is officially as accurate as a coin flip.

Niang averaged 30 minutes a game last year. With so many good players available and such a high speed system run by Hoiberg, what do you think Niang's MPG average will bump up to? I could see it go to Ejim's 32 mpg that he had last year. Kane averaged 34 mpg last season but that might be a reach with ISU's roster options. Niang will be a fun player to watch; I like his game a lot.

What? So you are telling me that when 3 out of the last 6 national championships came from a group of 7 (champions of the AAC, ACC, Big East, Big 12, Big 10, Pac 10, SEC) as compared to the other 61 teams is not a correlation?

Why do you continue to quote and respond to the troll? He's accomplished his goal and ruined another thread. And you keep it going.

To me it's not as much about minutes as it is about meaningful minutes with Georges. If you watched Iowa State closely, you could see Georges's production plateau in the second half of the first half, and towards the middle of the second half. He was always a great at the very end of the game, but that usually came after a good rest at about the 8-9 minute mark in the second half. You saw the stamina issue the most with his jumpshooting. His jumper is all arms, and so losing even just the slightest bit of lift he came up short on a lot of jumpshots. Also, Georges found himself in foul trouble at time, a lot of time on silly fouls that I think were the product of fatigue. A lot of times it was him missing a rebound and fouling someone on the put back, or not being able to get in position and fouling someone with his body.

Nice attempt at math/stats. That would per a group of seven PER YEAR, which over six years is three national champions from a pool of FORTY TWO conference champions. Just let this go, it isn't going to end well.

That's a great point. Glad to see Niang has put in the work despite the injury and taken advantage of the rehab to better himself. It will be fun to watch the transformation next season.

Yet he was weighed at 236 pounds at the Lebron Skills Academy. He was listed at 240-245 last year.

I don't doubt that Niang will appear fitter than last year, just as he appeared more fit last year than he was as freshman, but I think a 25 pound weight drop is bs.

...and to be honest I don't know if you'd want Georges to drop 25 pounds. His post game is based on his ability to get separation from his defender using his body. He's never going to rise over anyone, so he is reliant on clearing space and the incredible finishing ability he has. If he drops 25 pounds, I'm worried about his ability to create space in the post.
