I do deal with someone at Walmart who is good friends with Malik's mom. I am actually going to attend a game (with the guy I deal with at Walmart not Malik's mom) at Bentonville high in a couple of weeks.

He says she is pretty close to the vest about that stuff, of course lots of folks there hope he goes down the road about 20 miles. Though folks I have actually spoken with there are thinking ISU or Kentucky. But nobody really knows.

Says he is a great down to earth kid.

Seems like a long long shot but this sounds good to me!

Side note: What do you mean you deal with a guy at Walmart.:wideeyed:

I will be more shocked if he ends up at Arkansas than at. Iowa State. NBA Rolodex is going to come in handy on this one.

Arkansas will have a 1st rounder to talk about this year though.

Nah. He's a no brainer 1 and done. From all the schools he's looking at, it doesn't matter which school he chooses as far as getting drafted.

I think Fred needs to get guys to the NBA before this is really going to be a big deal. Royce didn't really make and Babb is a high D League. Fred really needs to get a couple in the NBA soon.

Just because Fred hasn't had NBA talent here at ISU yet doesn't mean that his relationships with NBA guys aren't good.

I agree with you, but it will help with recruiting. Bill Self even said Kentucky was recruiting against KU saying they hadn't had lottery picks until the past few years. Coach Cal is for sure using those tactics against us for Diallo and Monk.

I don't want to seem mean, but I think this guy is an upgrade from anyone that is on the team in terms of talent

Uhmm, nobody would think for a second that you are being mean. He's a top 5 talent in his class. We have nobody in that stratosphere on the current team. Georges has worked himself into that category when compared to current juniors, possibly, but on pure talent Monk is in a different category.

I honestly think this guy is definitely a 1 and done. He has incredible athletic ability and body control. Reminds me a lot of D Rose. His outside shot looks pretty good too which Fred could help work on. Malik Monk is exactly what we need after Niang is gone - someone who should be able to create their own shots and shots for teammates out of nothing.

Agreed. The NBA is probably used against us more than it helps us at this point.

Positives: 1-Fred played in the NBA, 2- Fred knows all the coaches/GM's, 3- Fred runs a NBA type offensive system

Negatives: 1- Fred is talked about for every NBA job opening and many assume he will go there soon, 2- We have little to no success of putting players in the NBA that Fred can talk about when recruiting against schools like UK, KU, Louisville, Michigan, etc.

Just to add to kcclone's point... The current # of NBA players by team for some of the schools we're recruiting against:

KU-16
UK- 18
Michigan- 7
Mich State- 6
Louisville- 3
Arkansas- 2 (plus soon to be Portis)

ISU- 0

It's not easy recruiting against the big boys....

This made me chuckle. For as much as most all of us hate Coach Cal because he comes off as a slime ball, imagine our disdain if we could hear what he's saying to these recruits about Iowa St & Fred. You gotta think if anybody does negative recruiting, it's him.

Babb is still snowed in with the Maine Clawhammers in D League?

I'm sure UK fans are ok with how he's bringing in the talent and at the end of the day, that's what counts.

Plus, there are ways talk more positively about UK's success, that may raise the question, without actually saying... "KU only has xyz lottery picks".

I think Royce is a feather in Fred's cap. No question that guy had pro potential, and Fred got him to play to that potential AND got him drafted in the first round with his connections. Granted, the Rockets got burned on that, but that's not Fred's fault. Royce is still the only legitimate NBA talent Fred has had. Maybe McKay and Monte will get there, but still not like Royce IMO. Point is Fred got that guy drafted through coaching and connections, which seems like a minor miracle in hindsight. Just imagine what he could do with a superstar talent that didn't have all the baggage.

We all know he can do it. But the facts are the facts. We have had 1 player drafted and have some non-drafted D-League guys. Coach Cal and others eat us up for that. When you go against the big boys its not what you "can do" its prove it. Kind of like when a sales person can close a big deal....results talk.

Fred is the man and I want no one else at ISU...just stating the obvious and what other coaches are saying. All it will take is a Diallo or Monk to change this. Kind of like how important Wiggins was to Self for getting a top draft pick.

And I am just stating the obvious retort. Its not like our coaching staff doesn't get to talk to the recruits as well and give their own pitch.
