Re: REPORT: Alvin Gentry, not Fred Hoiberg, favorite to replace Tom Thibodeau

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/a-eulogy-for-if-only-the-bulls-as-we-know-them-are-probably-done/

Just a good description of the Bulls' roster and salary cap situation:

They're old
They're injured
Not many "Hoiball" players
Great defense but little offensive talent outside of Jimmy Butler
No real trade or draft capital
DRose is a shell of himself
No cap flexibility this year
Everybody will have cap next year
No real shooters
Lebron and Kyrie are going to be there to torture you every year
Other East teams (Milwaukee, Washington if KD comes) are getting better in a rapid fashion

Fred knows all this. This was a team built to win three years ago. This is a Floyd situation, Fred. You'd be taking over a declining empire. Not a budding one. Think about it. If you're going to go, pick a loaded young team (Minnesota) or a win now team (Cleveland) or somebody committed to a long-term rebuild with you at the helm (Stevens in Boston).

A not quite good enough and about to decline team isn't what you want.
s

goodness.... Here I thought I was being selfish in not wanting Fred to leave. If the above is all true & hard to fix easily, maybe I should want him to stay for 'his' sake. Maybe you should email him that list. Just kidding....but it is interesting & noteworthy.

I could see Fred holding out for the T-wolves over the Bulls.

I disagree with this. They are going to get another high pick in the draft this season and are likely to get Towns or Okafor. That team will be pretty good in a few years. They have most of their roster for next season, and team options on most of it for the season after. Hoiberg taking over for the Timberwolves for the 2016/2017 season would be an ideal job for him, IMO. The Bulls, on the other hand, are a few years away from being in a rebuild mode, IMO.

ISU is an ideal job for him. Glad you're not Hoiberg's agent.

The T-Wolves are definitely setup for the future MUCH better than the Bulls IMO. And there are no expectations for the T-Wolves really. They've always sucked, so if you don't win there it's just because they've always been bad, not because you're a bad coach.

If Fred could turn the T-Wolves around, he'd be a hero there, just like he is in Ames.

Obviously I don't want Fred to ever leave ISU, but if he does, I want the best for him. I don't think the Bulls is a good choice for him professionally.

Wasn't Kahn a big part of the problem in MN? And he's gone now. IIRC he scored with KG and trading Mayo for Love but whiffed everywhere else (Flynn over Curry cough cough). And the shady deal they got caught with screwed them when they had KG.

Though I don't really remember who was responsible for all that.

I don't think the Bulls leak "Hoiberg is the only real candidate, the job is 1000% his, etc" if they don't think he is joining them. They'd need to hire a new PR person otherwise
You think these leaks are all intentional to drive narrative. They clearly arent it's been an open book the whole time and their is just a bad leak in the front office kikely many. Their was also a front office source that henhafnt decided and theybdidnt think he would. Why put that out there?

Re: REPORT: Alvin Gentry, not Fred Hoiberg, favorite to replace Tom Thibodeau

That's what I'm afraid of. The Bulls take a hard PR hit if they can't lure Fred away. The Bulls GM is taking a big risk if he doesn't have a confirmation in place.

Another thought is that maybe if Fred says no, would they drop Paxon and keep Thibs?

The Bulls are taking a PR hit firing Thibs. Not that they really care but testing the Hoiberg waters and then not firing Thibs would be reasonable. They know Thibs is popular among fans and that only a home run/big name type of hire will counter the hit they take from firing him. That could be a huge factor. The Bulls are trying to keep things under raps because they only plan to fire Thibs if they can get a PR worthy hire. If Fred (or a comparable name) doesn't bite, I don't think they fire Thibs.

Not to mention, they still pry have 1 solid year to be competitive with CLE, it would be smart to only get rid of Thibs if they think they have an upgrade that can win now. If that backfires, they can always fire him next season and bring in a guy they want to rebuild.

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

Excellent job.. seriously, that was the best analogy I have seen in months.

Cat = Iowa State fanbase.
Lizard cat's watching = Fred Hoiberg
Lizard that comes up to cat = Media.

"The ISU fanbase continues to nervously monitor Fred Hoiberg's every move. Everything seems calm until the media sneaks up and informs the fanbase that Hoiberg to the NBA COULD happen. Chaos ensues over virtually nothing."

Why would the Bulls leak out that Hoiberg is their top choice and the job is 1000% his if he wants it to give it to someone else?

I agree... but look at the title of this thread. WHy has their been some news about Gentry as well? Cytimes... go back to not posting... I felt better about the situation wehn you weren't here ;)

The PR hit the Bulls will take for firing Thibs was greatly lessened by their playoff performance. At some point fans have to realize that he's just not a good enough offensive coach to win in the playoffs. Even the game three win featured way too many unproductive Rose isos down the stretch with no other set being run. He's right up there with Scott Brooks when it comes to bad crunch time offenses.

@sigmapolis. Timberwolves will always suck. Wiggins is gone once his contract is up.

Name one rookie who has turned down a max rookie contract extension? It doesn't happen. Wiggins will be there six more years and if they can't build a competitive team around him in that time, then I don't think anyone would blame him for leaving.

A big part of that is how the team is built, they don't have many guys who can consistently create their own shot. D Rose being a PG seems like he'd be great at the pick and roll (something Fred expects from his PG) but he's really not. You can't build an NBA team around a PG that can't effectively run the most important offense play in the game. The Bulls are a lot like the Bears were under Lovie Smith, one dimensional. The Bears made a knee jerk reaction to be the opposite of the boring, low scoring Lovie coached teams. They took their defense for granted and have never been able to recover. That would the same scenario IMO if Fred goes to the Bulls. The culture change will lead to better offensive numbers but come at a cost of awful defense and fewer wins.

Their problem wasn't Thibs, its personnel related.

I can't believe no one is freaking out in this thread over Niang's tweet from this morning.

It could mean anything or nothing, but for those reading something into everything, it will make for a good Sunday morning panic.

Georges is just toying with everyone to get a rise. Relax

I agree. I follow Georges, and he tweets that kind of motivational stuff all the time. My first thought was that it would send some in this thread into panic, so I was shocked when there wasn't even a mention. The first responses to his tweet were some guys worrying it was about Fred.

Lol...I imagine that 800lb gorilla following him around leads to some awkward conversations for those who kinda of know Fred through their kids playing sports together.

"So Fred...anything new with you?"
