Does the legacy of the "mayor" change after this?

Hoiberg what of said anything to get the Iowa State gig. He certainly would not dance around and let everyone know how he really feels. Don't be so naïve. Do you believe every word from a politician?

By slow paced "grind out" I mean playing against teams that are slow paced. Like TCU for example.

McDermott just sucked and didn't make our program relevant.

McDermott also left the cupboards bare. Hoiberg is actually going to hand it off with some talent to build on.

I know...I got it. Since everyone else is speculating. Maybe he doesn't like getting told what to do every 5 minutes on the Applebee Coach's show. That wouldn't be irritating to listen to.

"It's my dream job" is the new "Firmly entrenched."

Back in 2011, when Paul Rhoads was the next coming of God at Iowa State, he at least never publicly committed to being here forever or dream job talk. He even foreshadowed the fact that we may not even want him here at some point down the road.

No I don't believe **** I hear from politicians but I don't see how that has anything to do with believing Hoiberg when he comes back to his hometown to coach the school he played for and loves and says it's his dream job. So you really think we should be happy with Fred right now and go back to being ****** at McD because he failed? Greg couldn't get it done and did us a favor by leaving. Fred built us up, achieved some pretty great things, has us on the cusp of some REALLY big things and is bailing. The difference seems pretty obvious to me.

I was listening to national sports radio today while working in the yard. The way Bulls management has handled this has put Fred in a tough spot here but also nationally. They were saying that Bulls fans should be disappointed with how this played out, TT got screwed and trashed and the Bulls were talking to Hoiberg behind his back, etc. Win and everyone forgets but this is probably not the way Fred wanted to (a) leave town and (b) start in Chicago - with public sentiment against him.

Fred should have had the foresight to be bad at his job to save us from all this.

He chose who to do business with. I hope he has success early, cause there will be plenty who will be eager to take out the long knives in both the local and national media.

I would never want to take back the last 5 years but that's why this is so hard to take. Maybe we'll keep the ball rolling but if we underachieve next year and slowly sink back down to the cellar after that, wondering what might have been with Fred is going to suck.

Of course taking over for a coach who got fired for making the NBA playoffs 5 years in a row in the city of Chicago for the franchise who has won 6 titles with fans who don't think anything of him other than an unproven college coach will be much easier.

And, as we know, people from Chicago are usually so reserved with their opinions, thoughtful, and respectful.

Will Fred's legacy be tarnished? Absolutely! I can't wait for him to head out the door at this point. I hope he loses every game he coaches in the NBA. I also hope he never shows his face around Hilton ever again. Fred's legacy? Fred who?

Actually I remember him saying Big 10 and then corrected himself. So maybe the Big 10 is Rhoads dream job.

What I am trying t say is this is all baseless information. People get emotional and say things they don't mean or shouldn't say publicly.

I'm not sure about other fanatics but I grew up watching Fred and following his career. I had his jersey and wore it all the time. Twitter is buzzing tonight and seems like there could be fall out to his legacy with the way this whole offseason has played out. I'm interested on how this will play out to the fans and how this affects the "mayor" status. I guess time heals all wounds but the initial reaction has been about what is expected.

First of all, I would say that it depends on what the facts are, what pans out from now on and also on who you are. Now that it has been revealed that Fred interviewed for the Orlando Magic job, I'm beginnning to believe that Fred's ambitions for NBA recognition (i.e., the ever present focus on "what's in it for me" these days, especially with professional and ex-professional athletes) have overcome his loyalties to ISU and his attention to performing at his best in the job he currently holds. For example, if we learn that his interview with Orlando was the week of or the night before the game vs UAB, how would you feel about Fred's legacy?

I think we need to wait and see what shoe drops next to see if ISU has been "Cael'd" again, then ascertain whether JP knew about all this some time ago and was going along for the ride.

One statement is completely in the person's control. Another isn't.

I will agree it is all "rah, rah, rah" talk, but if the timeline holds true that statement wasn't made much earlier then when back door dealings with the Bulls started.

I think this does affect everything. How could someone be so emotional about what Orr meant to him and this university and a little over a year later chose to chase his ego. In the end I will admit that it could very well be that he just wants to try out the highest level for a couple of years before he goes into the front office of an NBA team or possibly become an AD, knowing full well coaching wasnt his cup of tea long term.

Hoiberg can not let the public know that he is interviewing. Yeah maybe he should have not said dream job or whatever, but everyone is asking him every 5 minutes (are you leaving yet?) so he is forced to say things in public. He has added plenty of anecdotes that he is leaving. For instance, the Larry Brown reference of how he doesn't understand how he could coach for so long. Or when asked if he likes his job and he says "Not really."
