his UNI offer hasnt been on the table for a long time, but they definitely kept recruiting him after McDonnell. There was talk of them playing together in college, then Ernst got offers from quite a few MM's (MVC, OVC) in the July period last year. however he kept holding out for a P5 and eventually he didnt have any options left. then he blew out his knee.

Likely? No, but his video does show some potential. I do like that he was a #1 ranked guy in the state of Iowa for 2015 prior to his injury.

We have scholarships to give and a need at forward. He's an Iowa kid with POTENTIAL to contribute something. As long as we are in a position to take fliers, it might as well be that.

If he develops into a solid role player or something more for us, I think we are feeling like it's a win for Iowa State. Not every scholarship player has to have the potential to be the next Georges Niang.

Can we save one of the open scholarships for a mid-year transfer, should someone become available during the season? (like Burton, McKay) Not sure what the rules are for matching scholarships to people, and the timing of that.

You are right as even top-notch programs have room for taking some chances on some low-level fliers, especially when you are in our current nothing-to-lose scholly situation right now. Personally, I'm going to hold off from sounding the alarm on our new staff's recruiting ability quite yet. Now, if we get to the end of the 2016-2017 class and it is completely loaded with guys like these, then maybe I'd start getting a little nervous, but in the meantime... Shoot, even CFH had pretty much a flier or two in nearly every single class. All said and done, the floor can only hold 5 players at a time too.

At this point in time with a new coaching staff I think this is a solid pickup. We weren't going to get any studs at this point, we have some extra scholarship, and could use the frontcourt depth. Who knows, he could develop to be a solid player

Greece is a teeny-tiny little country. If you're 7 feet tall and live in Greece, you're on the national team even if you've never touched a basketball.

Call me names if you want but I stand by what I said. The guy was never going to play regularly in the Big XII. Ever. I'd way rather that scholarship go to an Iowa kid.

PS: And everyone ******** he's a low-ranked recruit, so what? Does EVERY scholarship player start? Is every scholarship player a super star? No. This is a solid, late pick-up of a kid who will probably work his *** off for this program.

Color me skeptical. Hopefully it works out but he is clearly the lowest recruited guy we have gotten in years.

Doesn't prevent him from being a good player for us of course.

I'd have preferred any transfer or a JUCO.

It seems like a 4 year scholly commitment to have a practice body, which Prohm was talking about a lot.

The fact he isn't the highest ranked remaining recruits tells me the staff isn't grasping at straws but bringing in kids that they feel can really help the program. UNI has a decent size list of guys like this that have turned out to be pretty special.

The Netherlands is a little teeny tiny country, too, but they have an internationally-ranked top 10 Soccer team. Playing on the national team in any country is still a quite a feat. You don't just walk up to the practice facility and say "Hey, I'd like to walk on to the team, please and thanks."

I don't see how you can stake the absolute certainty that he'd never play in the Big XII. First of all, as you said, he's extremely tall. Secondly, he has notable basketball talent that is easily visible by watching his tapes. He's not an NBA first round pick after next year, but he's still a talented player. My thought on him was that by his junior year, he's seeing regular playing time as a role player. He needs some time to develop, and he has plenty of that time, if he chooses to use it.

There are SO many ways a kid can meaningfully contribute and never touch the floor. 15 schollys, we play 5 at a time and have traditionally only gone 7 deep. Let the kid come in and hit the floor at least once before you marginalize his efforts, his skills and his choice to play basketball at ISU.

No, Greece is a team with a history of a very good national team. Remember who beat the USA a few years back in the world championships? Yeah, that was Greece. It isn't like he is sure fire lottery pick or something, but he has potential for sure.
