Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

JP and Fred got along fine. Look at Fred's last "favorite" on twitter...

It was from Jamie. Did they have their disagreements? Yeah, who doesn't. But he isn't the reason Fred left.

It's a bush league article from Hines citing "sources" HE DIDN'T NAME ONE SOURCE. Anyone could have wrote that article.

Re: Hoiberg and ISU admin relationship

It means they wanted Hoiberg to stop with the transfers despite the transfer model being successful.

Except for the gaping holes that the transfer model was leaving in upcoming rosters. Personally, I think Hoiberg's transfer model was about to run into some hard times.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

I too am a little skeptical of the article - seems pretty sensationalized to me. Ballroom incident seems overblown. Without anybody showing their identity, saying "near double digit" anonymous people sounded off with the supposedly same thing seems sketchy to me as well. Of course nobody wants to give up their identity, but I don't think this holds much water until the accusers can publicly answer questions.

I really don't think we were sold a line about Hoiberg to the NBA - I don't think there is anything that could have prevented that move. It was about the opportunity, not moving on.

Will be interesting to see what JP does for damage control, and what Hoiberg will have to say about it.

It doesn't take much to figure out at least one of the "Anonymous Sources".... Easy to hide in the shadows and lob grenades... see this message board as an example.

Fred had 25 million reasons to go to the Bulls.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

To the people who don't believe the article: why? Hines is very close to the program and wouldn't just throw crap out there if he didn't have sources and good info bc it's his reputation on the line with the program he covers. You can bet he worked on that and made sure he was sure of everything he put in there. There were rumors Hoiberg didn't get along with Pollard before he left so it's not like it's anything new.
And if you think KU is nickle and diming their bball program you are crazy.

JP's attitude towards the local media has always been "don't **** with Jamie Pollard"

But this shows "don't **** with the media"

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Hines isn't lying, the sources obviously are coming from the Hoiberg side of this but I wonder what made this all come out.

That's how I feel as well. It sounds like some people within the AD office are mad that Fred left and spun everything that happened over the last few years in a way that makes it seem like Pollard was out to get him. If you look at just about all those events, they don't seem unusual on their own. It could be that Pollard was trying to cut costs a bit but I highly doubt he was doing it with the intention of driving Hoiberg out. The reality is that we aren't Texas, we don't have unlimited funds. What Pollard did seems reasonable to me (not being overly cheap), but that doesn't mean that Fred liked it.

The only question is if this was really the reason that Hoiberg left and if it is did he and Pollard sit down and discuss it prior to leaving.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Is this Hines' way of auditioning for the Des Moines Register? It's the kind of thing they produce

(I should add that I am glad Hines uncovered some of this if true)

Why would Hines want to go to an inferior publication?

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Once again, the article appears to state (notice how broad and unspecified all this is) that they spent time in a ball room after check out and before their plane ride.

Yeah, to be specific this is probably what the situation was (guessing times)

Check out: 11AM, probably extended until 12 if ISU asked
Leave for the airport: 5PM, totally guessing on that but it was probably around then
Flight: 8PM, totally guessing on that but it was probably around then

So rather than pay for 14 rooms and a suite for a night when they'd only be used for around 5-6 hours, they checked out and the hotel let them hang out in a ballroom until they left. They could have gone and done something else but were tired so piled their luggage up and slept.

Why not lead instead with pressure to cut down on transfers? Or taking complimentary tickets away from the assistant coaches? Or other things that were more substantial? Heck, lead with the AD flying family members for free while making coaches pay to bring their wives.

Leath will be ******.

By ****** you mean happy? Leath probably co-wrote the article. The process of moving Jamie out has started, Leath can now go get his guy.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

They didn't spend a night in the ball room, the article states that they slept in the ball room for hours (whatever that means) I assume after check-out time and before they were coming back home to avoid being charged for another day of stay, which is not unreasonable at all. We are probably talking about a time frame after 10 or 11 AM check out.

Not sure what to think of the rest of the article. If true, Pollard has some things to work on. Seeing how the above situation was sensationalized by the author, I am having a harder time believing the rest of the article is 100% and not sensationalized.

My exact thoughts. Not checking out of a hotel so kids can hang out in their room seems like a waste of money and impractical. That part of the article was really worded to generate an emotional response. I love Hines, but this article feels like he had a bit of an axe to grind.

I'm not defending Pollard because I really don't know the guy. He may be extremely tight and cheap when it comes to a lot of things. However, I also can't just overlook the money he has helped bring into the university and what has been done with it to improve ISU.

If all of the things are true, hopefully this article may be the thing needed to put him in check moving forward.

If Pollard had a major influence in Fred leaving, he can pack his bags with CPR's.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

(1) Ex-coaches with major riffs with the athletic department don't come back to school the next year for football games.

(2) I have no idea what most schools do for charging for travel to NCAA tourney games so I'm not going to make any assumptions there. It may make sense if the AD is paying for low level staffers families who make $40k compared to assistants who make much much more.

(3) Any organization the size of our Athletic Department will have disgruntled affiliates who will gladly cast the organization in a bad light, especially when they can do so anonymously.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

That took balls by Hines and the Trib to run. Great job on their part.

Great reporting. I love that kind of honesty. Travis isn't the type to have an agenda and throw crap at the wall. This has legs.
