Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Fred will always put isu first doesnt mean there is 0 truth to the article. I would have left out the hawaii trip bc that just seems ridiculous. I thought JP seemed cheap way before this article but i dont fully understand the restraints he has to work with. ISU is not a national brand but the basketball team should be held in a higher regard since it is one of the few programs that does well and makes money

Exactly, some people are just blind and believe everything JP says. "Shockingly" they are the same people who wanted Otz as HC and were made Leath made JP interview more than one candidate.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Here's my guess:

There is some truth to the parts about friction between Pollard and Hoiberg, especially about how they touted his pay, possibly about some of the other stuff. The rest was from an ex assistant coach with an axe to grind and/or Hines taking some small complaints from people around the program ("man, it sucked we had to check out and then wait around in the lobby", "I hate having to buy tickets", etc...) and blowing them up as if they were real issues.

There's probably a bit more to it than that but not a lot more I'd bet.

When Fred Hoiberg tells Hines to not publish the article because it is not true and Hines does it anyway he deserves the backlash he gets.

Let's see if the national media who shared the artice will send out a clarification.

Unless Hines is lying, the article says he talked to "double digit" people who all said the same thing. To me, multiple donors were in on this axe grinding.

Article actually said "close to double digit sources" whatever the heck that means.

So the players had to wait for their flight in a ballroom full of players instead of in a hotel room full of players? That's terrible!

I love how through all of this, the best people are the ones that come in and say everyone should be ashamed themselves for what they were posting an hour ago. Lol...it's 2015, this is news and journalism. If you don't like it...email ESPN. My opinion can change faster than you can say shuck shuck juice and I'm an American so if you don't like it or if you want to wear a halo and have a constant glow behind you, feel free, but know you suck.

While I agree Fred is going to put ISU first, to me it says a lot for him to take time out of busy day coaching in the NBA for an inprontu interview to refute the article. If it was true, Fred woul dhave not taken the time to acknowledge it. To me it's Fred's actions here that speak volumes.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

This is all on Hines. Think about it. He used un-named sources, which he apparently couldn't even precisely enumerate and presented what they told him as fact, obviously without doing enough fact-checking. If all he did was check with JP the day before publishing, and did not follow up what JP probably told him with Fred.......then he is an idiot as a journalist, and probably needs to move on to a smaller town or something. It seems pretty obvious now that the article was written for sensationalism or something. Whatever his plan was in writing it, it seems to have backfired badly.

Reporters like Hines with the balls to say the truth are the type or reporters big cities with good teams have.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

They didn't spend a night in the ball room, the article states that they slept in the ball room for hours (whatever that means) I assume after check-out time and before they were coming back home to avoid being charged for another day of stay, which is not unreasonable at all. We are probably talking about a time frame after 10 or 11 AM check out.

Not sure what to think of the rest of the article. If true, Pollard has some things to work on. Seeing how the above situation was sensationalized by the author, I am having a harder time believing the rest of the article is 100% and not sensationalized.

We were departing our hotel in Honolulu a few years ago we checked out of hotel and waited around for hours for a late flight

I think the AD could of scheduled a day tour after checkout and had the hotel hold all the luggage till departure. Kind a sh#tty way to treat the team

Regardless, if multiple people say the same exact story, Im sure there is so truth there. The only problem I see is the tone that Travis tried to set in the article. Travis got examples of disagreements between JP and Fred, and tried to turn it into hatred between JP and Fred.

Can't help any with the basketball recruits we are courting. Whoever's agenda this was, did they even consider that?

Or he tells Hines not to publish it because it is true but he doesn't want to do that to Iowa State.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

All journalist do this because a lot of the people who give this type of information lose their jobs then the journalists lose their sources and in turn their jobs. If you only cover information that anyone can get them well you're kind of worthless as a journalist.

But using 100% anonymous sources on a story is pretty worthless in my opinion. It gives the story no teeth, although I guess we've seen gullible people will believe anything especially when they are looking for any excuse to pile on the get rid of Pollard bandwagon.

Exactly. Fred has other things going on. You could tell he wanted to get his point across quickly that there were no issues and had better things to do than refute rediculous claims from that article.

Paper that is losing readers weekly and need to stimulate discussion on the edge, those in the know or just listened to CFH knew his goal was NBA and coaching at highest level. Both did a great job on 1460 KXNO to squash 99% of what was printed. Interesting is (and I've refrained to using this trump card), I'm fortunate to be closer to inside than ave Joe Public Fan of ISU MBB and at Hawaii tourn there was early checkout as mentioned and aprox. 5-7 hours of putting bags in a room, but with exception of few everyone else was at pool or lounging around and who wouldn't, IT'S HAWAII.
