I don't see how that would have made Fred look bad. All it would do is reinforce the 'I'm following my dream' scenario and quiet the people who think/thought it was about money.
No one faults someone for NOT following the money.
I think the scenario of ISU offering Fred some huge contract to stay is equally ridiculous as the Hines article.
I think it was in the radio interview, Jamie said Hoiberg made it clear to Leath and Pollard that Duke could offer him $7mil/year to succeed Coach K at Duke, he would still take the Bulls job.
So ISU offering Hoiberg what, $5mil per year, $10mil per year to stay here? That's a political move, not honesty. In a way, I think it was
more honorable that Pollard did
not try to do some political deal to offer a huge contract to stay at ISU and make him turn it down. Coach Fred made it clear to his employers, before everyone else (particularly the fans) that his dream was to coach in the NBA. He has TRIED to make that clear to Cyclones fans, but some of them still can't seem to let that go.
There was nothing that ISU or Jamie could have done to keep Fred as our coach when the Bulls offered him the position. NOTHING. We need to accept that and thank Fred for what he did for us and for ISU basketball in 5 years, and enjoy the future fruits of that (relative) success. I hope Coach Prohm builds on that foundation and takes us to new heights.
