I guess option 4 in addition to the three I listed is that one of the incoming freshmen - maybe Lard, maybe somebody else - never makes it to campus.

So it has to be at least one of those things since there are 14 guys that could have a scholarship for next year right now and 13 to give out. Monte goes, somebody transfers, Ashton goes back to walk-on, Naz plays this year after all (I guess this is technically possible), or one of the freshmen/jucos never shows up.

I am a big Ashton fan and he has certainly earned his scholarship for this year. With his Big 12-level shooting and lack of a major weakness he is a Big 12 level player. But we have a ton of guys at his spot that are likely ahead of him. And he came here to walkon. It is the first option you exploit to make room for a guy that would see major minutes. If Prohm thinks Ashton is more valuable in his senior year than another guy will be in his two remaining years, then maybe he Prohm helps the other guy to find a new home instead.

If worst comes to worst and ISU has 14 guys that it wants for 13 spots (a good problem to have anyway), I bet you are right and Prohm will pull the Hoiberg "Richard Amardi to Oregon" move and send the least valuable one to another school that wants him and that the player wants to play at. Win-win-win. That's the business

I really think Malou is more than capable of guarding a 5 and it would allow us to go small. He's 6-9 so it's not like we'd be starting a 6-6/6-7 guy there. I watched a Yuba replay from about a week before he came to Iowa and Malou was posting up all game, guarding the other team's 5 and he was rebounding and blocking shots consistently. I don't know if we'll see him on the perimeter as much as I thought we would. His 3 point % dipped a bit this season at Yuba.

Well I guess it can't be too much worse than what we have had in terms of man-to-man post defense recently. I wonder if we would see even more zone in this event. Is Wayne Morgan still in Ames?

Big guys typically improve a great deal going into year two. I'm not saying he's going great next year, but I think it's reasonable to think he can be serviceable and play a lot of minutes.

He is a long way off but occasionally you see really big improvement from one year to the next

I'm torn on this. Carter has looked really far off. On the other hand, he appears to have a great attitude and all the tools needed to be a good player.

I really think he was set back due to not having any time with the team this summer and missing out on the foreign trip.

Look at Diallo's struggles as an example of how hard it is for FR who are set back.

Could be. I am basing it off of the zero minutes Prohm is investing in him. Imo if he is able to make the jump in 8 months and "be our 5", he should be seeing (or soon see) at least some minutes when up by double digits against poorer Big 12 competition. Maybe that is a Prohm thing and not a Carter thing. Now, if we are talking about him improving enough to be an occasionally used backup like Edozie? Sure.

I am hesitant to compare our situation to that of KU. KU annually has 4 and 5 star underclassmen on the bench. Self demands more on defense and rebounding from his starters and always has other options. Lucus, Mickelson, and Traylor would all see a lot of PT. Imo so would Diallo or Bragg.

Optimistically it sounds like a good supporting cast without any proven difference makers. Pessimistically it sounds a lot like the teams you see in the bottom tier of Big 12 standings.

Unknown, role player, role player, unknown SF forced to play PF/C, a 6'4" PF that does know how to play (defense or offense). Mostly all unknown underclassmen behind them. Honestly it does not look any better than the starting lineup on Fred's first team.

This is a stupid debate but calling Naz a role player is even stupider. Guy is a proven starter and double digit scorer. Is anything less than first team All-Big 12 a role player for you?

No.

A lot of proven starters, even ones that are double digit scorers are role players. He is a supporting cast guy. I would really enjoy a discussion involving the taxonomy of basketball players with you, but first you shouldn't be so quick to assign such a negative connotation to the term role player.

A graduate transfer big man is by far and away the best thing that could happen in the off-season for ISU basketball. We need a true big man next year to rebound and defend down low.
