Really worried about their inside/outside game. B12 doesn't really have any dominate big guys other than Motley and he scored at will against us.

We will have to bring the double team against them and their guards are good 3 pt shooters. Our rotations will have to be quick.

We'll have to be very efficient on offense like we were at home against Baylor to win this game.
Motley is on another level of athleticism.

Only thing I'm worried about is Swannigan. He was an animal. Last night was the first time I had seen Purdue play and wow... That guy is a monster down low. The Edwards guy seemed solid too.

Haas is ****. He spends most the game on his ass because he's such a clutz. Misses layups like it's his job.

I really like the way Young, Burton and Bowie are meshing. They seem to feed off each other and are starting to anticipate where the each other are at. We have had more ally oops in the last 3-4 games than we had the entire year. If these guys keep the paint clogged I like our chances.

Swannigan scares me, and if Purdue wins, it will be because of him. Its going to be a battle of contrasting advantages.

The match-up to me is similar to our Orlando, FL tournament match-up against Gonzaga.... Definitely large size and style differences, we played well in that game, and imo probably should have won, I don't see any reason that we can't take this one home too. I do believe with the effort we have put on defense and rebounding the post-season, I really think we can play with about anyone, last night though it heated up as the game went on, we were not as lights out shooting as well which I think bodes well for this tournament run. I also thought the first half of the game we had Nevada winded, and we came in the 2nd half running the offense in prevent, which seemed like a counter direction as we allowed them to get back into the game and get their legs under them, I believe we should look to run at all cost with Purdue, take their size out of the game, use it against them.....

All of eastern Iowa will be rooting for you.

This is the last year for a while you'll hear of them in the NCAA tournament. All seniors but one one and nobody left in the state penetentuary to offer a pardon and a scholly.
Lots of future food servers, janitors and felons on this team.

So if we beat Purdue with all of Hawkdom cheering for them will that count as a win against the Hawks?

From an Iowa fan that watches a lot of B1G basketball (insert lame joke here), here are my thoughts on Purude.

Swanigan-- As has been covered in this thread, he is a beast. Pretty much guaranteed a double double each night and has range out to the 3 point line. Good FT shooter too. This will be a tough matchup for Young.

Vince Edwards--He is their best athlete. Expectations were that he would develop into a 1st Team all league player this year but his numbers are comparable to last year. Interested to see if he is match up on Thomas or Naz on D, I would assume Naz.

Dakota Mathias---really good 3 point shooter. The kind of player you only like if he is on your team. The games he has played against Iowa he reminds me of the chunky kid that loves to party who shows up to intramurals and rains 3's all day. Doesnt look like a D1 player but can get hot.

PJ Thompson--not an offensive threat, not their best perimeter defender although he is aggressive with his defense. I think he will struggle trying to contain Monte.

Ryan Cline--3 point shooter and a decent one. 101 of his 125 FG attempts have been 3's this year.

They only play about 3 guys off the bench:

Haas--a large human being and fairly productive. Scores about 12 PPG while only averaging 20 MPG. For as big as he is, he has a pretty soft touch around the rim. Him and Swanigan dont play together a ton. I would be interested, because of ISU's lack of size, if Painter tries to run them more together tomorrow.

Carson Edwards--backup PG that is pretty quick. Averages almost 10 shots per game while playing about 23 MPG so not bashful about shooting.

Spike---Grad transfer from Michigan, was nearly the hero of the NCAA tourney as a true freshman back in 2013. Mulitple hip injuries, IIRC, that caused him to miss major time at Michigan. Doesnt score, has lost a couple steps because of his injuries and is really in there to run the offense while giving the other guards a breather.

Purdue led the B1G in 3 point % and averaged 80 PPG so this should be a fun game to watch.

I think ISU wins because of how well you are playing right now, it truly is impressive.

Swanigan is capable of having a 25 point, 20 reb game and literally carrying his team to victory.

Prediction:

ISU- 76

Purdue- 72

I think they'd get run off the floor if they played both of them at once. Who does the second guy guard in that scenario? Burton?

Swanigan would guard Burton in that scenario, I would think.

Painter would need to decide if having Swanigan guarding Burton is worth the trade off of the mismatch those 2 would create when ISU is on defense.

This game is heavily reliant on who can dictate the tempo they want. That starts with the guards, so we should have the upper hand, but need our back court to come out hungry.

Way up there
Purdue's bigs are great but it'll be interesting to see how they try to guard us. Neither Biggie or Haas will have anything to do with Burton so I doubt we ever see them on the floor together. The Burton/Edwards matchup will be the key to the game.

I imagine we push a lot more with a longer recovered from round of 32 to round of 16.... I do love how much rest Monte and Naz got in the first quart with how good of fill-ins DJack and Babb have been.....

I work with several Purdue grads/fans. They are scared of Iowa State, as they should be.

Key will be to score early and often. Play with a lead and they are in trouble.

Also, Purdue's bigs are prone to foul trouble. Force them to guard in space.
Bowie, Burton, and Young can shoot threes okay.

Man, I usually really enjoy hitting up the opposing team's boards this time of year, but there is some sub-HawkeyeNation level nonsense from the Iowa lurkers making that place almost unreadable. Did they show up like this for the Ohio State game a few years back?
